Fake Factory v9.5 Is it Worth a Download?

No question that Half-Life 2 is starting to show it’s age (although I think the facial animations have yet to be surpassed by another game, mind you I haven’t played many of the newer games), but as I was browsing Kotaku’s numerous columns on Half-Life 2 I noticed their take on FFv9.5 and after watching the video was suitably impressed (moreso over the upgrades in the environments, not so much by the npc models, some of which are abhorred).

I’m wondering if anyone here is running v9.5 and can tell me whether or not it’s worth a download. Another question is whether or not you can choose what you want upgraded (eg. The option to only have the environments updated and have the npc models remain the same).

I’ll link to the Kotaku article for anyone who isn’t familiar with the mod (there’s a video montage of the upgrades).

The levels looks great, but I swear this mod better have an option to use the original character models! The new ones are simply awful!

For facial animations, check out Mass Effect. Extremely impressive.

I’d agree on FF’s environments being nicer than the original, but from what I’ve seen I don’t think it’s groundbreaking. And you’re right, what they’ve done to the NPC models is abhorrent, Alyx in particular.

Alter Ego looks incredible, is that even out yet? They nailed what I meant when I referred to nothing surpassing H-L2. The conveyance of emotion in H-L2 was astounding back in 04 and it’s still amazing to me now, and that video certainly took that to the next level for me.

@Lamsey.

Well, I’m not looking for groundbreaking, I’m pretty sure there’s only so much that can be done to visually enhance the game before you begin surpassing the limits of what the Source engine can do. However, those environments are vastly better than the current original form of H-L2.

If you like shitty, plastic-looking human models and over-sized textures hogging harddrive space, you’ll like fake factory.

@ Dias

As I mentioned, the NPC models are abhorred, thanks for reading the post. I was more interested in FFv9.5 for the environment upgrades, hence the secondary question as to whether or not one could choose to install only certain parts of the mod, or if it only had a grand install option where having the new NPC models is unavoidable.

It didn’t appear that there were any oversized textures to me (insofar as the environments are concerned) although there weren’t any real close-ups.

Either way, not concerned about hard drive space.

Isn’t version 10 coming out soon? I’d wait for that.

Alyx model looks better.

The problem with trying to remove the unwanted content of the mod, such as the models, sounds and textures, leaves you with basically nothing changed, save for maybe a poorly balanced skill config file.

Well, that’s just it, I was hoping that someone knew if it could be installed as modules with a check box system where you could choose to only install the Environments or only the Models or anything else I may not have thought of (sound updates etc).

I suppose I could just check out the site and hope that such information is listed.

@ v10, those NPC models still look aren’t terribly impressive. They look a little better in than 9.5. The sexification of the chicks is a little unnecessary though. Those Dev’s seriously need to get out more.

I think it explains on the site that you can just rename/move/delete the folders if you don’t want them.

So unnecessary… so, so unnecessary.

It’s the equivelant of what Half-Life: Source was to Half-Life.

Look! Larger textures and less/no fog and expensive reflections! Revolutionary.

Not worth the 1.6Gb, especially because of what they did to the character skins. From what I understand, the characters were their main focus… :retard:

The characters were their main focus???

Well, I actually can believe that, they sure put a lot of work into the tits of the female NPC’s and their bodices in general.

Again, the trailers don’t really allow for a proper surveying of how good the environment textures are (namely a close up look), but what work they have done on updating the environments does look good.

Ah well.

Yeah, I looked at what was in v1.0 and it was all about character models/skins…

Well, what I meant to get across there is that generally speaking, the character models aren’t particularly good, and that upon closer inspection, I can see which characters (and what features) they devoted their time to. :stuck_out_tongue:

“shitty, plastic-looking human models” vs the god awfull that will amke your eyes bleed hl2 oryginal models, wow hard choise ;]
damn last time i pleyed hl2 was in 2005, it looked a lot better in my memory, i cant even look at those comaprisons screens now ;f

^ at least the main character models look fine in the orange box engine

i’d rather have fugly models than a total Atmosphere-genocide in the form of a conversion mod.

Apparently, the devs have something for Adriana Lima…

I just want higher res, more detailed textures of the environment and characters, not a complete redesign of the game.

Do they have a website or do we just have to stick to Filefront for info?
