I agree completely.
I apologize the criticism, Fancy Pants, but you are acting very much like many Christians I know. Almost all (if not all) Christians I know don’t really respect other people (despite saying that they do and being very devout), they don’t respect differences and always use rage to attack people that disagree with them. Obviously, that’s not what Jesus taught at all.
Attacking them back with rage will only increase theirs. Again, if you think what you say might convince the other person, than say it civilly. If you start felling rage, than it’s better that you don’t say anything.
Not all of them, mind you. Most of them fight back irrationally, but when they become a bit more mature, a few of them may realize you were right. I’m a very good example of this. I used to be an intolerant, partially irrational Christian, and the main reasons I fought back irrationally was fear of rejection of becoming a truly bad person if I stopped believing. And, of course, fear of Hell.
Incredibly, fear of Hell made me a much worse person than I am without religion
I believe the best way to show they are wrong is have them interact with atheists, specially good atheists. That shows, in practice, that they are wrong about atheists being bad people, which proves them wrong about religion being what makes them good people. A lot of “theories” of their religion breaks apart. That is what made me an atheist.
