Evolution vs Creation

anything is possible, as long as you believe

I have never heard of any “theory” that proposes that we aren’t conscious.

I haven’t seen anybody say that, but I’ll go ahead and say this: evolution is true and anybody who doesn’t accept that is dumb. I know that I come off as an asshole saying that, but it’s the truth.

Not accepting mountains of evidence is dumb.

Or maybe that’s just an excuse used by people that adjust their religion according to popular science. Sure, there’s a metaphor or two in there, but all that stuff about God making Adam out of clay, or Noah loading two animals of every million of species on Earth unto his (apparently) ridiculously large wooden boat? Those are not metaphors, they actually mean that.

Simplistic? That all matter in the universe evolved into the state that it is in today over the course of 13,7 billion years, starting with an extremely hot and dense mass exploding? Not to mention that the theory is supported by observations and a shitload of evidence?

Consciousness is being aware of one’s self and one’s situation. In that sense it can be explained as a brains response to stimulus combined with it’s current state of activity.

If your mind isn’t aware of it’s situation it can hardly even be defined as conscience.

Evolution can be repeatedly observed. Makes it as true as anything can be. Anyone who says it isn’t is very dumb. Christians and all other groups included. Macro evolution and abiogenesis is usually what counter evolutionists mean when they argue against evolution.

My problem with Christianity is that it is unsupportable, and it’s God is self contradictory.

The irony of the big bang theory and christians having distaste for it is that it was thought up by Lemaître, who was a Catholic priest. It is far from simple and stretches the boundaries of our understanding of our universe. I personally am interested in the brane theory, or M-theory.

You very well could be. As a general rule, most people who strongly follow a scientific approach tend to follow logic and evidence in what they believe. Since Christianity doesn’t follow logic based off of evidence, a person who follows science and is also a Christian is a severe minority.

Also, the scientific method ( if done properly ) doesn’t change. Evidence and observations change.

Every Christian I know would disagree with that.

how many christians do you know that would disagree with evolution, the big bang, or the benefits of stem cell research? because if they disagree with any of those things, they certainly don’t have any knowledge of science and they’re lying to themselves.

The people you know are irrelevant when looking at overall statistics.

Every scientist I know would agree with that.

And hey, there’s no pressure for them to embrace a term in order to look smart, because they’re already scientists.

I don’t see any “rage against Christianity” in this thread unless you consider treating Christianity as one would any subject as “raging”. :S

tl;dr–If Ra didn’t exist, then explain the sun.

I’ve not seen anything like this whatsoever. Sure you got the right thread?

I actually think that those that believe in a deity and believe in science (now that’s a strange turn of phrase; do you also ‘believe’ that 1+1=2?) are in the vast majority.

I think the problem with such a statement is that, on a shallow level, its not really true. Most Christians don’t believe that gravity is just “intelligent falling” or that bananas are evidence of creationism; in fact, I’d go so far as to say that most believe in evolution, the Big Bang and every other scientific explanation for every other phenomena.

Where religion plays its part is in explaining the context to each of those theories. The Big Bang essentially operates from a standpoint of “we don’t know what caused it, but fuck it lets move on”, like some sort of exam paper where the question is left blank but heavily asterisked so that one remembers to answer it later, but is free to move on to the bulk of the exam. Most Christians would accept everything the Big Bang says, but would say that their religion explains the origin of the Big Bang, which is where science falls flat.

Obviously such belief has tensions. Science is getting closer and closer to answering questions like the origin of the universe and the origins of life, which means the Christian explanation to the God ‘x’ factor is increasingly losing ground all the time.

Ultimately, however, the Bible has far less to do with explaining observable phenomena as to providing guidelines for everyday behaviour. While athiests are content with forming their own rules for how to live life, people of faith rely on men in the sky to delineate between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. Saying “God created the heavens and the Earth” is just evidence of how old society explained why the sun came up at night, rather than an absolute truth, at least in my book. But, of course, some Christians completely disagree.

You obviously have never been in Brazil.

What a shame :frowning:

Fun fact, there’s a girl in my class (I live in Denmark) whose mom is Brazilian.
She doesn’t believe any of those.

She’s pretty hot though.

Boobs > Science.

Even though Christian girls may be in denial of the truth about evolution and the universe, the hotter ones amongst them are still good enough to fuck.

the fact that her mom lives in denmark should be a sign that she’s not your regular brazilian

What ever happened to the art of [COLOR=’#202020’]seduction conversion?

but she doesn’t believe in the big bang or evolution, like gugamilare said most brazilians don’t?

my bad i thought you meant she didn’t believe in the disbelief

see what i did there

so yeah she’s a moron

can I ask something here? I dunno if this has been discussed already but does anyone know why the terms ‘creationism’ and ‘Christianity’ are constantly inter-confused? there is this idea that the two cannot be separated or that christians are automatically creationists? why is that?

God bless.

Because, with at most a few exceptions, all Creationists are Christians, and uninformed Christians find it a lot more natural to believe in Creationism.

Yeah, yeah, the opposite is not true, there is a significant amount of Christians that believe in Evolution, bla bla bla.

I’ve seen a few Muslim and Jewish creationists, but far and wide, most creationists are Christians from my experience. I haven’t seen any creationists that suggest that the universe was birthed from a giant cow lately.
