Christians love to use “interpretation” as an excuse… a few hundred years ago people fully believed what the Bible said about women, that they were inferior to men and should submit to their husband’s wills.
Nowadays they claim all that as “misinterpretations of the Bible”. And that goes for a lot of other subjects besides their view on women.
i like how as science advances, christians are like “oh noo noo i never REALLY believed that hah i mean come on now!”
christians change their beliefs as science advances, and it’s fucking hilarious. what’s even more hilarious is the ones who don’t, like people who still don’t believe in evolution. i like to think of how fucking stupid christians are going to seem a few thousand years from now. but then again, i believe christianity will be as insignificant to future people as ancient religions are to us now. like “ha, they BELIEVED that?”
It is interesting to see how theories are made in science and religion.
In science, hardly anything is set in stone, the most common exceptions are theories that were tested and approved by various generations of scientists. When a scientist states something new, every tiny details of the experiments he made are documented, errors are checked and calculated, etc, all written in paper. Another scientist may read the article, repeat the experiments with details, read the original conclusions and even say: no, this is wrong, that is how it should be done, etc, and he can write a new article, with a new, enhanced experiment, new conclusions, debate the old conclusions, etc.
That is why it works and shows every time more complex and useful results.
Now, in religion, almost everything is set in stone. There is not much room for debate. Therefore, it does not evolve.A priest elaborates a lecture for the mass and, in one week, no one really remembers anymore what the priest said. Well, ok, there are some magazines, but what is said is either
too basic, like “murder is bad”; it’s like if science stopped at the discovery of gravity
useless, like “we must fill ourselves with love”
stubborn, like “you should marry virgin”; no reason is really given, but stubbornness is usually agreed among religion folks
too abstract or generic; this goes to the alleged justifications for the stubborn parts
…
Anyway, all sorts of things that makes you facepalm yourself. Like I said, no room to debate, so what is the point in saying something if you repeatedly say “I’m right, I’m right and I’m right”? Some things are so abstract that I can’t really remember them - because there is no logic in the arguments, and what I memorize the easiest are logical steps to reach to a conclusion.
As a result, scientific documentaries are so full of content, sometimes surprising and interesting, while religious rituals are, well…
I kind of doubt that. Maybe Catholicism will shrink, but Christianity in general is here to stay. I mean hell, it’s already survived 2,000 years and is still going strong.
Yea well, a thousands years ago our knowledge of the universe was rather limited, there also was no communication like the internet etc. With all of our knowledge available to every person, they are more likely to become agnostic or atheist as they dig deeper into the facts. There are lots of countries (in Europe) where more than half of the population don’t believe in a god or are agnostic.
To be honest I can’t even remember when was the last time I spoke to someone about religion or god, it no longer plays a major role in our society.
If anything, Christianity evolves as science evolves, which is why Christianity in today’s world is either a bastardized form of science, or a bastardized form of older Christianity.
Intelligent people are becoming agnostic and atheists. The problem is the most part of the population think that evolutions is absurd. It is difficult to understand it and, even if you understand, it takes some more time for you to realize that God was just a simple way that ancient civilizations used to explain origin of life and other complex phenomena.
Nowadays religions are social conventions. They hide themselves behind a lot of beliefs, but that’s not what they truly are. People have a religion because that connects them to each other, giving common ideals and purposes. It is comfortable and convenient to belong to a group, that is pure surviving instinct.
In other words, religion is there because of convenience and instinct. What is that alleged reason that Christians say people leave Christianity again? Oh, yes, for convenience and because they can’t control their instincts.
If everyone around you belongs to a religion, you better be in that religion, otherwise you are fucked! It doesn’t matter if the religion believes in acceptance and tolerance, you will at least be seen as a fool and people will avoid you, if not worse (Christians, I’m looking at you). They will condemn you and you will no longer be accepted into that group, and you know that, so you deny yourself every thought about God being imaginary, and that creates the illusion that you believe in it. You are trapped in your own mind.
Now, if not every single person around you have a religion, it might take some time, but, if you are smart enough, the trap eventually vanishes. Because the reason of its existence also vanishes. Only when your mind are outside of the trap you can acknowledge its very existence.
Religions wouldn’t have such a negative point if they were professedly a set of common social beliefs, ideals and purposes, which is actually the good side of them. I don’t really care if the social beliefs are based on what Jesus or Buddha said. If you want do fancy dances, attend Masses, repeat the same text over and over, go ahead, but, please, put some reasoning and logic into it and know that the bible is a fairy tale. There are good things that can be learned from the bible, yes, I learned a lot, but you can’t blindly believe in everything it says.
Awesome wall of text but this instinct can work in both ways. After I became an atheist, My friends started asking me questions I didn’t want to get into trouble so i rejected them a few times but they wanted to learn. Right now I have 5 atheist, 3 agnostic, 1 deist friends. And the rest of 'em are not very religous. Only a few of my friends do their praying etc.
What bothers me is that everything we use and are dependent on in our daily lives is there because of the same science that gave us the theory of evolution. People don’t realize that ‘theory’ is the highest ‘rank’ in science, it’s just as real as the computer you’re using.
I don’t understand why people are against evolution, evolution has nothing to do with the origin of life or the universe. It simply explains what happened after life began. The scientific evidence is beyond overwhelming. If someone tells me they don’t “believe” in evolution, they either have no idea what it is or they’re saying it to maintain the comfort of knowing they were created by a god for a purpose.
I used an outdated map showing religion in Europe, it showed nations hovering around 40%, and many more around 30-40%. If you want to get worked up over a 10%, sure go ahead.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
