Episode 3 Discussion and Information.

Well, we know the Borealis is in, hopefully we’ll also visit Kraken base. And this game had better take at least 10 hours to play through!

Oh, and if it’s not too much to ask…I’d like to see a new weapon and/or enemy.

There would have to be a new enemy. Granted, the storyline doesnt really call for it, but the fact that VALVe has published this many games, and they havent changed anything but the story line… even though thats enough for me to keep going, thats not enough for a lot of other gamers.

I still think Shephard needs to play a part. Maybe as that ‘new enemy’. Or unwittingly so at least.

That would fit with the twists VALVe has placed in the story as it is.

Trust me. Nobody has forgotten about Shep. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lord I hope not. I like him almost better than Freeman (check my profile and you should be able to see why).

FYI…

This smiley - :3 - scares the fucking shit out of me.

I’d really like to know why people have such a hard on for him. What makes him so damn interesting?

Only one to freak the GMan out.
Only one to counter the GMan.
Only one to have encounters with both Calhoun and Freeman.

His game answered a lot of questions too (though no one likes to admit that it CAN actually be used as cannon).

That… and hes a Marine. I mean… cmon now… we are pretty damned interesting people…

As much as I would like to see Sheppard again, I doubt it.

He was just a fun character to play. But, sadly, there is a better chance of you being right.

But still… the thought is fun. Maybe once BMS guys can actually take a break… they can think of a good story line for Shephard…

Eh. whatever.

I think I’ll have to get Opposing Forces again… I remember playing it, but I probably didn’t finish it cause I have no idea what you guys are talking about :stuck_out_tongue: .
Or I’ll watch walkthrough videos cause I’m lazy, and maybe memories will come back

I would have if I didn’t visit a forum that constantly posted about him. That and the shitty mods made, or failed that were about him.

If it was up to me, I’d make an Opposing Force 2 done right. You’d play as a combine, you know, the side that’s actually against Gordon. I’d treat Adrian Shepard as if he were completely insignificant to the story. (but still possibly cause a few of the events merely for tie-in reasons) I’d actually set the mod during HL2 and/or the episodes. And to top it all off, I’d end the game by killing off Shepard. I’d even make it that he was killed in the Citadel’s explosion if possible. Maybe even calling the last chapter “Shepard’s End” to really hammer the message in.

Ha… wow. Tell us how you really feel Dias

An entire FORUM that posts? Or just a couple of threads… either way, I do agree that the mods were shit. Agreed. But Shephard was back when the cascade originally happened. Just as Freeman was. And Calhoun. But both of them were used (obvious with Freeman) in future games. Whos to say that Shephard cant be used. Still in stasis, doesnt matter why.

If there was to be an OF2 (which I DO NOT see happening) I would hope that its Combine. Since, as you stated, thats whos against Freeman NOW. Where as before it was the HECU Marine SF unit. Would only be fitting.

If you wanted to do tie ins, whilst still killing him off, might as well make him a vital reason as to why the tower blew up. Take a little of the credit away from Vance and Freeman… maybe give a small view into what helped it (maybe a video cam set up or being able to play as him for that small duration). Killing him off would be good, if done right. Not just out of Vengance… although… that would be fun too.

Ehh.

God I hope we’ll get some updates this year!

remind me what advisor is? i personally hope for a 4 players co-op mode

How exactly did he ‘counter’ or freak out the Gman?

Its more of an observation instead of a flat out truth, but Ill try to explain a little better.

The GMan didnt notice Freeman until after the cascade. His goal was just to get the cascade to occur. Freeman was a bonus (hence “The right man, at the wrong time, can make all the difference”). Shephard on the other hand was a strict nobody. Not a squad leader, not a specialist in any type of field, just… a Corporal (which in normal cases IS actually important, but for the purpose of cannon and the way the game was played, he had no particular role, just part of the mission). But proved (in my opinion) more resourceful than Freeman. Since GMan already had the man he needed for any personal (or other) reasons, Shephard turned into more of a liability (at first). Seeing how Shephard handled each ‘scenario’ (for isntance, the closing of the door as the rest of HECU were evacuating, with the GMan standing right in front of it, adjusting his tie, then walking away, and yet Shephard still made it out), provided the GMan with an excuse to keep him at bay. Besides, Shephard saw more of what was going on with the facility than any survivor should have, but proved useful, though in an unsure way (hence why he needed to be silenced, but not terminated. a rash, ‘sudden’ call by the GMan).

Normally, the GMan is calm and collected. Freeman did not surprise him until the destruction of the tower (when the Vorts kept him at bay). Shephard did it right from the start (which, when you think about it, actually goes along with the idea the Marines in the real world try and handle things (myself being one of those), with ‘shock and awe’; only this was on a shoot everything or die situation… and a video game).

Soo… that was a lot of text… and Im not sure I got what I was trying to say across… Im sorry if that is more confusing than helpful.

EDIT–
Another way, something I had forgotten: The GMan appeared to be more helpful to Freeman than hindering. While in the case of Shephard, he was almost directly trying to kill him (though keeping indirect routes as per his persona). and yet Shephard came through each time. Again, in my theory at least, proving a little more resourceful than Freeman, after the initial cascade.

I always thought Gman just put Shep into stasis so he wouldn’t be an important factor in the Half Life storyline.

Interesting. There are a couple of points (not flaws mind you) that I’d address though.

Firstly, the G-Man seemed to have his eye on Shephard for quite a while before the Resonance Cascade. He can be seen talking to a commander at the boot camp training area, and he may well be the figure who bumps Shephard up to Corporal.

Secondly, the G-Man helps Shephard as well as hindering him. Quite early on in the game, he lets him out of a room flooded with toxic waste.

I would hazard a guess that the G-Man had marked Shephard down as a slight possibility, but grew increasingly more impressed by Shepard’s “ability to adapt and survive against all odds.” I wouldn’t say that Shephard freaked the G-Man out. It would just seem that the G-Man originally had such low expectations of Shephard that his success came as a genuine suprise.

Freeman on the other hand had the HEV suit, so perhaps his success in HL was less of a surprise. He certainly seemed pleasantly surprised by Freeman’s progress in HL2 though: “You’ve done a great deal in a small time span. You’ve done so well in fact that I’ve received some interesting offers for your services.”

Completely forgot about that. Touche’… Good point.

I remembered that (it was one of my mental ‘facts’ I used but didnt say). But wasnt the timing a little odd? As in… he let him out once he realized Shephard had figured a way to get to the door?

True… but Im a little clouded on the timeline. Him speaking to the commander… was that before or after the order to clean Black Mesa of any evidence? If it was before then I would understand… but if it was after… what purpose would the GMan of had, if he had already picked Freeman? Good point with the line though. That and the low expecations.

Here is where I think Shephard is a little better than Freeman. It may just be because of his ‘training’, and ability to adapt (such is the common phrase in the Marine Corps, to improvise adapt and overcome). Not to deny Freemans progress though.

According to the OpFor manual (the handwritten notes) Shephard became aware of G-man almost two weeks before the Black Mesa incident (march 3rd - 16th)

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
