Duke Nukem 3D like you've never seen it before

Been in development for a few years now and should be out soon, just a few issues to deal with first.

Click on the link above the video for HD.

Needs epilepsy warning.

By the way, before anyone wonder why it’s so friggin’ dark is just because to show off the lighting effects purely for the sake of the video. AFAIK they’ll keep it more true to the original once it’s finished.

Never played Duke Nukem, so might be a good place to start

Crazy, not too bad, looks like a supremely polished up version of the 2004 issue (which mainly just included 3D models for the normal enemies, not the bosses), still has that funky perspective that the original had too.

I’m really surprised a team hasn’t come around to just remake it on a completely new engine.

I’ll definitely give this remake a run though.

@taxi_evil

Definitely a blast to play through, not much rhyme or reason to it (but such was the way with FPS’s of that era) but that’s what is great about it. The second campaign is amazing (or was for the time) hehe.

I was about to say “okay, it looks cool, but I beleive the thing about lighting effects is to have, I don’t know, light?! At least DOOM 3 gave us a flashlight!”

Someone needs to do a new episode of Duke Nukem 3D. One that’s just as epic as what we hoped DNF would be like, using all the HRP and Polymer stuff.

Actually there has been at least one remake that I’m aware off which was being made on the Source engine. However the team were contacted by 3D Realms and had to shut down. :meh:

Link to story.

There’s screens available but I can’t find them at the moment.

The real reason the levels are so dark is because they have to put in ambient lighting themselves. I’ve been tracking the Eduke32 polymer engine for a while, and I hope they release soon!

Well, here’s to hoping that they kept all the resources. Nothing to really stop them from continuing now, hehe.

Actually, 3DRealms is still in buisness as a company rather than a development studio (ie they’re not making games anymore) and they’re licensing the Duke Nukem series to developers.
They’re actually seeking help to complete DNF.
Let’s hope they do complete it, but for now, let’s put this embarassment in the back of our heads and move on. Time goes on, games get made, but when Duke Nukem Forever is released, I won’t give a damn about the 13 years of development. I’ll welcome Duke home with open arms, empty wallets, and a little less Hard Drive space after installation.

I was thinking the lawsuit with Take 2 might end up with 3D Realms going completely belly up, on top of the millions spent on a game that hasn’t been completed yet, I don’t know how they’re going to afford it.

Looks like HL1…
Ah…

Those were thee days.

I don’t like the 3d models. The charm of the old FPS games was the sprites, which allowed for death-animations which are impossible even today with true 3d models.

JonoF’s port of Duke3D is awesome enough for me. I played that three or four years ago and thought it kicked arse.

phil i totally agree, this looks like shit, eaither go 2d or 3d with a really new engine and crazy polycount to make it look like the old one ;D

Update yourself to EDuke32 instead.

8-bit mode is most likely to be supported so you can play with the old graphics but with the new effects.
And as previously mentioned you can’t remake this game on a completely different engine unless you want a legal case all up your ass.

I don’t see the point really… So much work just for cosmetic changes.

Yeah, what kind of tool would devote the time and energy to make a game from the nineties look cooler?

<.<

Love for the game maybe? Check Duke4.net and the 3D Realms forums and you’ll see that a lot of people look forward to it.

Funny thing is that the news about this Polymer rendering was posted on the 3D Realms forums at the first of April so everyone thought it just was some kind of April Fool’s joke. Well, it turned out it wasn’t.

Some screens (huge resolution):

Monitors have brightness adjustments for a reason.

I think this might be the mod to make me play this game once again.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
