So id software will be using megatextures for Doom 4…
That means we’ll be seeing some good ol’ texture pop-in, Rage-style. Unless of course, carmack learns from his mistakes.

I think the biggest downfall of mega textures is that so many people don’t realize why they exist.
That’s not a texture technique drawback. That’s called oblivous faggots.
Texture pop-in is megatexture’s biggest downfall. However, its perk is covering huge areas full of detailed and unique textures in enormous maps with as little RAM usage as possible.
Yeah, it just requires massive amounts of disc space and, by extension, so much compression that whatever visual gains you get from making textures less repetitive (though there are still lots of repeating textures. The artists create stamps which are used over and over again) are negated by the awful pixelation.
idtech 5 makes a lot of sense for a PS3, which has relatively little memory and massive storage media. Rage looks better than most shooters on the console, no arguments there.
It just makes no sense for PCs. That said, I don’t think the pop-in is an insoluble problem on the PC if they actually sit down and try to figure it out next time. The storage and fidelity issues, though…I don’t see those going away.
Those guns do have a plasma gun feel to them, but they look like a shotgun with a belt fed system or a drum magazine. Or both. Judging from the size of the casings.
as far as making new games they don’t learn, but watching engine progression he’s always ahead of competition. (in certain aspects)
just look how many engines are borrowed by other dev’s.
