Doom 3 source code is out

On November 22, 2011 John Carmack finally released Doom 3 source code. It has been tweaked a bit to avoid any legal issues. Just like it has been with Quake III Arena source code release, project iodoom3 has been announced.

Looks like we can expect some kickass games based on Doom 3 source soon

Its 2011. I don’t think the Doom 3 engine is relevant.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

does this mean we can compile doom 3 from source? probably possible to make an iOS/Android port now.

also quake 4 runs on the same engine

Oh yes it is  The only thing is if an iPhone or Android phone can handle it. Of course an iPad should be able to do it.

I am very happy right now.

This shows great promise. For what I do not know.
(the only use I got out of any of the older id engines was replaying Doom and Doom 2 in the Doom Legacy engine)

It may be outdated today from a technological perspective but for the gaming community, it’s an invaluable resource.

It’s a good base to amateur game developers learn from and it provides a good and solid engine for indie/open source game projects.

That, and It’s always possible to improve it to be up to more modern standards

At the top end of the phone market I’m sure there won’t be a problem, but yeah those with lesser 'droid phones might struggle.

Of course. Compare DarkPlaces engine to original Quake 1 engine. Nothing is impossible for an insane coder

Doom 3 still looks good. Whatever voodoo Carmack poured into this engine, he fucking lost it with Rage.

Plus, this is great news for The Dark Mod. Hopefully this means they’ll eventually get it to where you don’t have to exit the game every time you want to load a new mission.

Personally I want to see a remake of the original Doom running on this baby

I can’t wait to see what the dark mod does with this

I´d be veeeery surprised if you can get doom 3 running on ipad or any phone whatsoever, remember back in the day it needed a killer system to run it decently, I remember not being able to run it on full with a 6800GT and an amd xp 2500

I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

“the HTC Zeta is a newer one – promising a Qualcomm 2.5GHz quad-core CPU rather than the Nvidia-made Tegra 3.”

Have you guys not seen what Epic Games has been doing with their mobile version of the Unreal Engine 3?

I think a high end mobile port of Doom 3 might be more feasible than you think.

Quad core on phone =/= quad core on PC.

Clock for clock the mobile processors are significantly slower. I wouldn’t be surprised if a 700mhz celeron performed better in most aspects than Tegra 3

and even if it was the same mhz wise, what about ram and gpu?

There was a team that did that for the first mission of the game way back when. It’s called Classic Doom for Doom 3. Look it up. It’s really fun.

That’s right, I know about it. But it’s only the first episode: Knee-Deep In The Dead, and I’d love to see the whole Doom remade on Doom 3 engine

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
