What the title says. I Googled but couldn’t find the answer. I’m referring to the retail version of Opposing Force that was released as an expansion and the one that came with the Platinum edition, not the Steam version or the one that comes with Anthology.
No. You download it just like any disc based game and run it.
Thanks. The reason I asked is I noticed the Steam version does require it. I tried playing the Steam version offline and it wouldn’t work and I was wondering if the retail copies required some kind of connection (although I don’t think Steam was around then).
it should work just fine in Steam offline mode, it’s a problem on your end, try deleting clientregistry.blob files (not sure if Steam still uses those)
I think Steam may have existed at the time of Op4’s release…but if it did, it was pretty much solely restricted to Counter-Strike, if memory serves correctly. Sersoft’s right though, Op4 should work offline. However, if you have the hard copy, that works just as well. No problem by the way haha anytime.
Steam came out in 2003 and Opposing Force initially came out in 1999 and in the Platinum edition, it was 2002 so the retail version should predate Steam. But, I was still wondering if OP disc/retail version needed Internet to play (or activate).
Oh, and when I try to run OP (Steam version) in offline mode, it gives me a window mentioning something about syncing it with Steam servers but it still has a button that says “Play Game” but when I click it, nothing happens. The reason I even tried it in offline mode was because I noticed when I start the game up it mentions connecting to servers. This was not just the initial time but every time I start it up as if it’s meant to have a connection to at the very least start the game.
Ah. I thought op4 was released in 2002, and I couldn’t remember exactly when Steam started (though I coulda sworn it was 2002).
Have you started while in online mode at least once since install?
Yes, twice I believe before I tried offline.
Actually, it was 1999, just a year after Half-Life, made by gearbox ( their first game actually).
On topic, does the retail version have anything different from the steam one? Like changed music or something like that.
Pretty sure Steam came around 2004 with HL2’s release.
And even then, it was optional beta. It wasn’t until WON went down that Steam was mandatory for anything.
to be fair, it was pretty crappy in the early stages
xfire was a still a thing, before it was bought out by viacom
Funny enough, I asked this question as my first thread here.
