I am just curious as to whether or not Black Mesa will be able to run off of a disc at some point (You download it and burn to a disc yourself, not buying it in a shop on a disc). I don’t think it would due to issues with steam, but I think it would be quite cool.
No it won’t work. You have to copy the files to source mods folder (or it’ll be copied automatically trough the installer).
That’s what I thought, but if it is possible then it would be quite handy for some people (myself included)
Weren’t there plans to include the installer on pc gaming magazine discs?
You could probably mount the CD drive to C:\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\ with the windows disk manager.
edit:
Yeah with this you could probably run the mod directly off the CD, but it would be slow as fuck and I doubt you really want 10 minute loading stops.
Why would you want to run the game off the DVD?
You can burn it to a disc and use the disc as an installer. But not make it actually require the disc to run. That would just make it a pain in the ass anyways.
It would just save space on my hard drive mainly, because I assume BMS will end up being around 4-5GB?
Yeah, but as mentioned CD drives are a LOT slower than even really slow HDDs. Prepare for unforeseen loading times. [color=’#212121’]c wat i did thar?
…
I have intentions of getting it on a disc and making up a label and cover and add it next to my Half-Life collection just for kicks.
I’m probably gonna copy the installer to a DVD and lose it soon after just like all my other non-bootable discs.
Easy solution: burn the installer onto a disc.
Easier solution: don’t uninstall it. :3
Kinda hard to keep the game installed while formatting your hard drive or moving to a new PC.
So use solution #1.
I’m just gonna use solution #3
never change hard drive
I’ve been changing hard drives like crazy for the past 2 years but before that I’ve used the same 80gb drive for 6 years with no problems.
How do you plan on saving the game if it’s on the disc?
Well the saves could go on your HDD like normal.
Wow, I didn’t know you had coding experience.
What would be the legal implications of the BM team providing mailed DVD copies of the finished product, with a small s&h fee? It would be useful for those of us still living in the stone age era of limited monthly bandwidths, or to distribute amongst friends/co-workers, et cetera.
Note that the fee would only apply for shipping and handling of the DVD and not the product itself.
Option #4…
Don’t get the game at all
