Disc-based

Not an option. :hmph:

Get a better fucking HD. $69 at Best Buy gets you a 320GB external drive https://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba±+320GB+External+USB+2.0+Portable+Hard+Drive±+White/Black/9402121.p?id=1218113772239&skuId=9402121 or $99 gets you a 1TB internal https://www.bestbuy.com/site/Western+Digital±+Caviar+Black+1TB+Internal+Serial+ATA+Hard+Drive+for+Desktops/8909595.p?id=1213047091732&skuId=8909595

That’s cheap as piss. Even earning minimum wage and paying for an apartment I could afford that. And did.

On newegg you can get a TB drive for like $70.

Oh. Shit. I way overpaid then. :C

My previous post sounds extremely douchey. I didn’t mean it to come out like that.

You wouldn’t need to ship it, Isaid you download it and burn it to a disc yourself.

The point is, he can’t download it.

Also: TB drives are more like $85 on newegg. My bad.

I never said I couldn’t d ownload it, I was just wanting to save space on my HDD.

Someone else said it. Jeez, self-centred much?

Also, why would you say “I was wanting”? It makes no sense and is completely grammatically incorrect. Just say “I wanted.”

It’s completely grammatically correct, if a little awkward.

“I was wanting” is the first person imperfect active indicative. It indicates an action that was started in the past and hasn’t yet been completed. “I wanted,” however, is first person perfect active indicative. It indicates that he wanted to save space in the past but not the present.

/grammar nazi :stuck_out_tongue:

I stole a 1.5tb external drive from best buy, then I threw away the enclosure and it became an internal HDD.

But then I sold it because who the fuck needs more then 1 terabytes of space?

Use a USB Drive.

That’s still pretty slow. Running HL1 off of usb ups load times from ~2s to ~15s. Granted, I have a crappy USB drive, but still…

When I had XP on my computer, it took like 3 hours to load 3 gigs to a flashdrive. I tried loading the same file onto the same flashdrive when I switched to Windows 7, and it took all of 15mins (estimate, it was awhile ago and I think it actually went quicker), and each time I loaded something to it, after just having loaded the initial file, the transfer rate actually increased. I never took the time to see where it would top out. I tried it on my friend’s laptop, which runs Vista, and it went really quickly too. I really haven’t tried to load steam or anyother game programs on a flashdrive, with the exception of Age of Empires. Would steam even work on a Flashdrive?

That’s weird, on my current PC windows XP copies files alot faster, regardless of what type of disk it’s copying from/to.

If you’ve got games preloaded in memory it’ll go faster than any number of HDDs.

If you lose the installer, or your switching PC’s, or you have to format, this comes in EXTREME handy because to download 4G’s would take for flipping forever!

That’s not an option, that’s a failed result.

In regards to the DVD business. (This is more directed at Ram than anyone else)

You may be interested to know, that Off-Topic Productions (developers of The Nameless Mod) are subject to the same regulations with their mod. I.e. Charging people for the mod is illegal. However, they are allowed to “sell” and ship DVD copies of their mod, as long as they don’t make any profit from it. Basically, they can only charge to cover shipping costs. (possibly packaging as well) Mind you, they’re a company and not a loose collection of individuals like you guys, but it’s still useful to know…

That would be pretty damned useful. I’m sure i’m not the only one who still appreciates the value of having hard copies of games and shit on readily-available CDs/DVDs that you can easily pop in and out to install/re-install stuff. I don’t like how PC games are gearing towards online distribution solely and I can’t be the only one.

Also, when the end of civilization eventually arrives and the internet dies I’d like to still be able to install games on my computer that I’m running off of solar electric generators up in the desolate mountains so I can enjoy Black Mesa and other games over and over again.

Laser-based media doesn’t last forever dude, especially homemade discs.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
