Desura

So how 'bout that Desura?
https://www.desura.com/

I admit I’m interested. Any feedback from somebody who has it?

It’s useless IMO. Steam and ModDB (yes, I know that Desura was made by ModDB, but that’s not the point) already do the job perfectly.

Isn’t this the steam platform from moddb ?

EDIT : Yes it is. Trying to break Steam monopoly…

Yes. It regroups all of your mods and indie games in a Steam-esque interface. But Steam has already more Indie games and mods are already integrated in Steam’s game list. Really, I don’t see Desura’s usefulness.

This.

I mean honestly, the entire “selling” point for Desura is the indie games they sponsor on indieDB, but tbh Steam has like waaaaay more indie titles anyway.

A more valid competitor for Steam would be EA’s service, Origin, and that only because EA is a big name company, because from experience I can say Origin isn’t spectacular.

Desura does make it simpler to browse/install mods. I found moddb a bit difficult to get my head around so Desura was useful in that sense. Other than that, it doesn’t offer much and I rarely use it.

It’s a nice primer for n00bs. I use it from time to time to check out what’s new in the mod world, but that’s about it.

The only use it has is for people who are too lazy to see if the mod they have installed has an update. Like me, but I never have it open anymore.
Desura required me to reinstal Factum Solus, and it uses a different file path than the copy I already have. Now I don’t know which one is the updated one, and which one is the old one. Only one shows up in Desura, but both show up in my Steam library.

I find it a bit unhelpful that most of their popular games are shortcuts.

*All

They can’t afford licenses and don’t sell anything but indie, more or less. Even then, all of the GOOD indie games are on Steam.
