Dear Esther no longer a free mod; commercial release

But he also said its not just the story that wasn’t enjoyable, he didn’t like how there was little action or whatever.

While I never played Dear Esther, I understand that. I don’t think I will play it because I play video games for action and gore and things like that.

I heard about this game a little before it came out but hadn’t played it till now. I was intrigued with the idea so I did a little research on the game. It was a research project at a college to see what would happen if a game was stripped of all action and only had the narrative left over. It was also supposed to be ambiguous as to the story. Depending on how one interprets the story, each person can have completely different ideas of who you are, who Esther is, what the island stands for, heck if you are even alive or not. I doubt the story will change much, actually I think the voice overs might be the one thing they are porting directly from the original game. I for one am looking forward to it. While I found the mod very slow, for some reason I want to replay it again. It was unlike any experience I have ever had in a video game.

If you faggots don’t like it being a commercial release then you should have commented on his post where he specifically asked if we liked the idea.

Well said.

He asked if we wanted it to become a proper indie game. Indie games don’t make real money.

So how would we have known that he meant charging for it?

Nobody had the balls to argue with all the people who said yes, go ahead.

I won’t be paying anything for the game. Period. The original game was boring as all hell.

That said, i have a feeling that this game is going to be like every other single player game these days. Pirated to all hell.

Ahem.

GAMES INVOLVE THE PLAYER.

This man is a graphics artist. NOT a game designer.

Can’t argue with that, although I suppose you could debate how much involvement a piece of entertainment needs to be a “game”.

IT HAS TO HAVE IRON SIGHTS

AND SAND BAGS TO HIDE BEHIND

I don’t feel safe without waist high walls to hold me in. I need arbitrary limits to direct me or else I fall apart mentally as a gamer.

after dying 20 times on easy

Where’s my radio I want to call in an air strike on these fuckers.

hey this is good cuz it will prove that games can really be art the is the real goal of the new Dear Esther

Games have always been art, its just no talent douche-bags who like to say otherwise because they like to think that their medium for art makes them better since they have no actually skill to.

that is how most people think (""“no talent douche-bags”"" “”“who like to say otherwise”"") they think. that they are better than every one witch is why that we need this game

It was boring as hell, just walk and walk and walk, walking in the wrong part of the map resulted in death, so no real free exploring the island, just a pre setted path to follow

Well it looks nice though I probably wouldn’t buy it for that. I wouldn’t even be able to buy it if I wanted to. So I’ll just shrug and forget about it and hope black mesa will be free.
I can’t play many new games that are coming out now because I still have a shitty single core so finding something fun and new that I can actually play is rare.

Next thing I know Black mesa decides to upgrade to portal 2’s source build and blow up on graphics.
Kind of ranted there, sorry.

I really liked the story, but the execution is a once off type of thing.

News updates.

Looks promising!

I, for one, plan on getting the mod via rusty trombone.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
