Crysis 2 - release date Q4 2010

Gamereactor - Cevat Yerli Q&A

We picked up a copy of the Finnish Gamereactor magazine and made a list of all of the relevant stuff from the featured interview:

  • You play as Jake ‘Nomad’ Dunn.
  • Compared to Crysis there will be more freedom, larger gameplay areas and more tactical warfare.
  • Nanosuit 2 will give players more freedom in how to tackle situations in the battlefield.
  • The different aspects of nanosuit 2 are designed to further encourage experimental and fit-for-your-own-style usage of nanosuit’s features.
  • Cevat thinks that the weakest parts of Crysis were 1) the story, which lacked originality and details 2) the on-rails gameplay style in the end and 3) that there were no console versions.
  • Compared to the majority of console games, the console gamers will see Crysis 2’s freedom and openness as a new and interesting gameplay style.
  • The player has again the freedom of choosing what weapons to use and how to use them, or how to take advantage of the environment.
  • Crysis 2 will again feature the familiar “Veni Vidi Vici” (I came, I saw, I conquered) gameplay style.
  • In Crysis 2 Crytek will, of course, try to surpass the previous Crysis games in graphical splendour and technical features.
  • Setting the events of Crysis 2 to New York City was a result of a long thought process; Crytek did not choose New York City because of “console limitations”.
  • With three previous games set in the jungle Crytek decidedly wanted to avoid making a fourth “jungle game”.
  • New York as the setting was chosen in the early stages of development; Crytek wanted to see Nomad in a metropol and make the area as a huge sandbox for the player.
  • Compared to jungle, urban environment offers more opportunities for gameplay based on vertical differences and the player will have more freedom to choose how to progress and plan out attacks.
  • Player will be able to, for example, jump between floors and buildings, and roll down along a crater wall.
  • Cevat did not want to share details on Crysis 2 multiplayer… yet.
  • The transition from one nanosuit ability to another will be “softened” in Crysis 2: for a short while before speed changes to power, the player will have both abilities in his possession.
  • In the battle against the aliens, New York City will offer plenty of architecture that the player can destroy, protect, climb on and take advantage of.
  • Fighting against the alien invasion will be “catastrophically beautiful”.
  • Crytek have tried to actively avoid of using dark dystopian colors and tones that have been plaguing many games these days.
  • Details on the story will not be revealed until summer.

I see something interesting. Light reflecting off of shiny surfaces.

Anyways, I’ll be looking forward to this game if it’s nearly as good as the last one.

I can’t wait to play in a GTA IV environment that’s even bigger than Crysis’ maps not to mention you can go into buildings and jump from one building to another while shooting aliens, how badass is that?
Now that it’s also available for consoles I expect far better framerates then the original Crysis (they’ve shown with Warhead that tweaks can give you a lot of extra framerates without noticably losing eyecandy).

This has my interest since they’ve decided to take most of the “lol generic” comments to heart (rather than the burn the heretics type of thought that happens when your work is criticized) and set out to prove those people wrong.

I’ll certainly buy it.

I’ll buy it. The first one was interesting enough to grab my attention it does sound like they made a lot of improvements.

Of course, you can’t enjoy how good it looks for more than about 5 seconds before unplayable FPS requires lower graphic settings… but it will probably still look pretty great.

I’ll buy it. Looks better than the first one, and thats saying something.

I have to admit, I’m interested in the possibilities in a fully destructible urban environment.

Hopefully they optimize the hell out of the engine so I can play… and hopefully the actual game won’t blow this time.

I had no problems with the gameplay of the first one, it reminded me of the first predator movie, of course it wasn’t completely amazing but it wasn’t bad.

Agreed. Crysis wasn’t really revolutionary as an FPS but visually it looked stunning and I thought the only place where it completely failed was the cliffhanger ending that I wish had had at least a little bit of closure.

Im buying this no doubt.

New York… seriously?

I’m definitely buying it. :3

Yeah. It was a bit like, “What? That’s the end?” Seemed like they just got tired of making the game, and decided to call it quits halfway through…

Anyway, via SCIENCE it’s easy to see that using CryEngine3 on a console is like playing a CryEngine2 game fullest settings on a PC, while playing CryEngine3 on PC with fullest settings is probably like playing (what will be,) CryEngine4 on a console.

Damn what a horribly convoluted sentence. I agree though. I can’t freaking wait for this game.

I would absolutely love to see an console trying to run Crysis on maximum settings at 1080p, the lag would be biblical!

There wouldn’t be any lag, the game wouldn’t even start. Crysis Warhead had much better performance (gotta love DX9) and I bet the CryEngine 3 will run even better.

I like how they adapted it for console players aswell, they mentioned a huge amount of people pirated the Crysis games but amazingly Crytek kept saying they would not let the PC community down. Those consoles are going to establish a nice cashflow, lets just hope they don’t take “the Infinity Ward” path.

Also, the CryEngine 3 is the worlds first advanced gaming engine to support 100% real-time - that’s like a developers/modders dream.

No chance. If you actually watched that video, the guy comes to the conclusion that CE3 on consoles is like CE2 on medium settings on the PC. A far cry from “fullest settings”. CE3 console has crappy draw distance, low res textures, no motion blur (full screen, or object motion blur). I just hope that these limitations don’t translate over to the PC version of CE3. Here’s hoping they’ll use DX11

This sounds very interesting, but for the life of me, I can’t figure something out. I believe I heard somewhere that the sequel will pick up immediately where the first game left off, so how do they magically wind up in New York with the nanosuit 2? Even if they decide instead to start the player off somewhere else there’s still that plot whole of what happened on the island. I don’t think any rescue team would have ventured into that ice dome to rescue them considering what just happened, and they sounded very resolute about ending the whole situation on the island.

Also, in that picture he is exchanging fire with human military units. What possible human military units could there be in New York while the whole world is under attack by aliens?

Crysis 2 starts 3 years after the first game.

Apparently they haven’t figured out who the human enemies are yet, according to the person in the interview.

The screenshot in my posts suggest some kind of enemy (look on the right), I don’t see how the Koreans could manage to pull of an invasion of New York though.

I noticed in a CryEngine 3 trailer that it uses deferred lighting, we know this type of shading does not allow for anti-aliasing (just like GTA IV, Dead Space and Mass Effect 1 + 2 have no anti-aliasing support).

Hmm…
