CPU for this motherboard?

Alright, I’m getting new CPU and video card for my computer. Intel’s list of processors compatible with my motherboard (Intel D945GCL) says that I can take a Core 2 Duo LGA775 processor with a 1066/800 FSB speed. However, the list only goes up to the e6700, which is totally overpriced and just not that good. I’m not sure if the list is up to date because support for the product has ended and the main page for the motherboard said it was for ‘historical purposes only’.

Could I use a processor that is newer than the e6700, as long as it has the correct FSB and slot type, and is Core 2 Duo, even if its not on this possibly outdated list? I was looking specifically at the e7500.

Current Specs:
D945GCL Motherboard
Pentium 4 631 3GHz Processor
1GB RAM
GeForce 8500GT, upgrading to 9800GT

LGA775 is just about all of the Core 2 line I think.

So the socket type and the FSB is all I need to worry about, even if the e7500’s not on the list?

It is possible that your BIOS doesn’t support a newer CPU, but bassicly it should work with all C2Ds

Get a C2Q.

Any of these:

You cant get the Q6600 any more… It was great value

that’s a MBILF

Get the E4500 if you’re lucky you can clock it at 3.5Ghz

Unless your board can’t overclock.

Get an i7, overclock to 4.0ghz

Ain’t gonna work on that socket though.

And 4ghz isn’t really worth it. It’ll quickly result in it being unstable/decreased life.
I’d recommend a max of 3,8. 3,6 to be safe, which is what I’m running it at.

Yeah

I know quite a few people running stable at 4.0ghz on air

Hmmmm… not sure if I can really overclock, I’m running an emachines and emachines is simply crap. But I’ll keep all of this in mind, thanks.
