Could Op4 be retconned to fit cannon?

Okay, I know there are people working on making Opposing force using the source engine. There are also various fans who clamor for Adrian Shephard to make a return. The major point that constantly is contested is that Valve hasn’t accepted Race X as cannon and if they brought Adrian Shephard back, they’d be forced to accept Race X as cannon by association.

However I was wondering if this really needed to be the case. What if Opposing Force was retconned when it was redone? COULD it be retconned? As a little thought experiment, I thought about what the different Race X creatures really accomplished and what they could be replaced by that IS part of Half Life cannon.

Pit Drone - These were essentially the Vortigons of Race X

Shock Trooper - essentially the Alien Grunts of Race X

Shock Roach - These have no counterpart, but might be substituted in certain situations by having a few more snark traps scattered around.

Voltigore - these have no counterpart in HL1 that I can think of, but HL2 provides an excellent substitution with the Ant Lion Guardians. Obviously they would lack the long range attacks of the Voltigore, but would make up for it by being much harder to kill. Obviously having every Voltigore replaced with an Ant Lion Guardian would be a bit much, but the Acid Ant Lions bring in the long range attack that the Guardian lacks while still being easier to kill. The baby voltigores could be replaced with regular Ant Lions.
Even if Valve felt that this SHOULDN’T be how Ant Lions got into earth’s ecosystem, that gets wrapped up neatly by the Nuke at the end of the game, which can be said to have wiped out that crop of ant lions, but then another group of antlions entered earth’s ecosystem at some other time period.

Pit Worm - This was essentially the Tentacles of Race X. Lets face it, the entire scenario was practically a carbon copy of the part in HL1 where you roast the Tentacles with the Jet thruster testing area. Obviously the section would need to be drastically reworked in order to make it still play properly, but having two sets of tentacles that come out of pipes that stick out above the toxic waste could then be flooded and killed by the toxic waste level raising the same way.

Gonom - Again HL1 offers no real substitution, but Episode 1 shows that regular headcrab can use grenades when they take over combine, so if headcrabs take over military in Op4, you could claim that they can use grenades too while also having the body armor protection. It wouldn’t directly replace the gonoms, but it might help balance areas towards that.

Gene Worm(final boss) - this is the only one I don’t have a clear idea for replacing. Theoretically, you might be able to throw in an advisor or something and claim that it was a frontal scout for the combine. At that point Adrian Shephard may have played an unknown part in keeping the combine forces at bay, but also being responsible for how well prepared the combine forces were to deal with Earth’s military force when they attacked during the 7 hour war.

Male Assassins/Black Ops - I don’t think this would NEED to be changed, but if Valve was feeling particularly anal retentive, the assassins/black ops could just be made so that they were all female. At that point the female assassins/black ops would need to be allowed to use other weapons, since the combat did change drastically. (grenades, smg, and sniper rifles)

Spore Launcher - There’s no clear indication that this is connected to Race X, or for that matter even connected to Xen. I don’t think leaving this in would break cannon.

So do people think these substitutions would allow Opposing Force to be treated as cannon? Is there anything else that would need to be revamped for cannon purposes? Would it still be fun to play even without the “new” enemies to fight? Could all the various levels be balanced properly? Would it make the game better or worse? I’m curious what other’s think, or if people have given any thought to this at all.

:fffuuu:

I still like to just pretend Op4 never happened.

Well… I think the voltigores would be better replaced by bullsquids. They’re not as strong as the voltigores, but I still think they would replace them better.

Shock Roach would be replaced by the AGrunt weapon. (Since you’re not going to have Shock Troppers, this weapon shouldn’t exist.)

And I don’t really agree with the advisor… maybe a smaller version of Nihinlant? (Which would be able to open portals to bring reinforcements)

Bullsquid only take a couple shotgun blast or two at most. I never had that much luck with the voltigores. Also the reason why I suggested ant lions is so that it would also capture that social structure being in place.

this was already assumed, but I’m talking about the fact that once you get the first shockroach to use as the weapon, all following shockroaches will attack you. This is something that the Hivehand never did and wouldn’t really be practical to implement, hence for balance purposes, the snark traps could be put in the same area.

like I said, that’s the only enemy i can’t think of any suitable replacement for. Having more than one nihilanth wouldn’t work, since the whole point was that nihilanth was the last of his kind and was controlling the vortigons.

Maybe you could fight a strider or 2 as the final boss. A strider with combine elite from another world as support?

an underground strider battle? It feels wrong to even think about a strider being anywhere not out in the open.

Some of those sound just too farfetched. A better idea would just be to leave all the Race X creatures the same but Valve could say they are in fact, from Xen. Also, the Spore Launcher is in fact Race X, it is an infant Shocktrooper.

Whoever added that is full of bullshit. No where does it even hint that it’s an infant shocktrooper.

EDIT: Wait, didn’t read the citation. I still have my doubts though.

Why do you ask?

Having doubts about that first citation I can understand, but I think the second citation makes it clear. The Spore Launcher’s filename is “baby_strooper”. I think that quite heavily hints at it.

Gunship maybe?, or just a whole lot of combine which would have the added benefit of not having to shoot eyeballs. Also, the strider can just be there for fire support and not come fully through the portal, like the worm

Shun the unbeliever!

I’ve never really played OP4, but I like the idea of a bunch of other shit happening in Black Mesa that the player of HL1 had no connection with what-so-ever.

Let’s take the comic book route and just say OP4 is in an alternate reality; when the resonance cascade happened it created another universe, in one is the Adrian Shepherd story, where Race X filters in through the cracks, and in the other is the one we followed in HL1&2. I think that’s what we’d do if we were to retcon-punch it, honestly.

I could delve deeper into my crazy ultra sci-fi non-sense explanation, but the point of a retcon-punch is that you’re left feeling confused and violated afterward.

Well, Opposing Force may be unconnan, but to me, everything is connan when you make it fit the half-life. I want to believe.

And there was me thinking I’d seen every misspelling of ‘canon’ on this forum (including this thread title) How wrong was I?

In principle I like the idea and I reckon it would work for a remake of OP4 but I think it still wouldn’t mean Shephard needs to be referenced anywhere else.

A game that takes place during the 7 hour war. The assignment wouldn’t be to actually repel the combine forces, but to keep the critical rebel forces of Eli, Alyx, Kleiner, Magnussun, and Mossman alive (with the help of Barney) during the whole conflict. Because of the importance of the mission, the candidate would still need to have a similar level of resourcefulness and skill of the “One free man”, but also have a background that a soldier has of being able to commit to a losing battle knowing that the differences made in it will ultimately lead to victory. Adrian Shephard fits that bill perfectly, and by using him allows Gman to keep Gordon out of danger until the most opportune time.

Why do you want to believe?

Race X has totally come when gordon was in/on the Xen. No appearance in HL2 due to geneworm’s death. Nuff said.

Gonome is not cannon? But why don’t you think zombie barneys and soldiers is not cannon?

Gonomes aren’t canon because they’re a made-up second stage of evolution of the headcrab zombie. that’s never been seen since.

zombie barneys and soldiers are canon because a headcrab can latch onto anybody’s head.
