Core vs CPU temps

Every program I use to monitor my temps gives consistent core temps, around 36-37 °C when idling and with a max of 55°-60° on load. I know these are good temps. (I used Core Temp, HWMonitor and Speedfan).

However, the CPU readings are a different matter: both speedfan and hwmonitor give me 93°C on idle, but when I’m gaming the temps go DOWN to about 50° and then slowly go up to about 70-75°.

I know that the 93° value is obviously wrong, but can the load values be correct?

Any ideas? Just a faulty sensor, or should I worry?

I’d say a faulty sensor. The values under load COULD be correct, but I wouldn’t fully trust it. On the other hand, when you hit peak temps, the CPU temp is usually about 7-10 degrees celsius higher than what the actual temp is, so yeah, the data is likely “correct” in the sense that it’s what you’d expect.

So just go with your core temps for monitoring your peak temps, since that’s more accurate anyway. Unfortunately, since the CPU temp is better at idle, your idea of your idle temp will be kinda vague. But it’s not like the sensors are real precision instruments or anything, they just keep you from burning up your CPU. I think your PC’s alright.

Your core temps seem a little high under load though. It’s nothing to worry about, really, but what kind of cooler do you use?

I’m running stock cooler on the i5 right now. I’ve been meaning to buy something else since I got the computer about a year ago, but most aftermarket coolers are really expensive in my country -even a hyper 212+.

most likely the CPU temp diode on the Motherboard uses an incompatible value system that appears to be reversed by the software (either intel chipset sw, BIOS or the temp reading software)

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, unless your case heats up the table and smells burnt when idle, and cools down significantly when gaming.

I know that the idle value is wrong. I was wondering if the load values were to be trusted.

I would say no.

Do you have an Asus board by any chance? They have a history of having problems with temp read outs. The i5 shouldn’t ideally going above 70 on a regular basis, 65 is what it should be maxing under full load.

CPU readings on most apps are taken from a different sensor or if the sensor isn’t there it just makes up a reading. The core numbers look to be more typically and probably correct.

It’s asus indeed.
