Computer Freezing

My computer has been doing this thing on and off where it freezes for about a second and then goes back to normal. If there’s any music playing while it does this the music will repeat and make a grating noise. It usually happens about once every 10-20 seconds and it seems like it only goes away entirely when I jiggle my hard drive cable. After about 2 or 3 weeks the problem will come back and I will jiggle my HD cable again. Just this morning I ran a clean install of Windows 7 (my old os was xp) and now the thing is back and it happens every 2 or 3 seconds. I jiggled my hard drive cable a bunch and even unplugged it and cleaned it but the problem just got worse. Any suggestions? I really need to get this fixed my computer is unusable. :’(:fffuuu:

Also, I don’t notice any freezing while the computer is booting up and it seems to get worse and worse the longer the computer is on.

EDIT: the problem went away on its own, but I would still like to know what is causing this because it will come back.

EDIT2: It’s coming and going. It seems to get worse if I run windows media player

EDIT3:AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH make it stop!!! :’(:’(:’(
My internet goes out whenever it happens.

seems like your system is unstable, I remember when my pc was like that, it was annoying as hell…

Agreed.

Is there any way to fix it?
Also, I sometimes get random bluescreens while playing games, could that be related?

fuck fuck fuck fuckj fuck fuc kj fuck fuck fuck fuck
what the fuck should I do??? Hhhhhhhheeeeeeeelllllllllppppppppppppp!!!

This is unbearable!!!

It might have to do with your cpu… but I’m not sure. Try replacing the cpu with another and see if it stopped. If that is the case then your cpu is probably broke.

Would a really really shitty cpu from a 6 year old computer work?

it works in safe mode but when I started safe mode with command prompt it didn’t boot and restarted. And the cpu is too old it won’t run 7.

EDIT: turns out the problem was there was a lot of dust in my computer. I took a vaccum to it and a soft clothe and it worked.

How can I keep my computer from getting too dusty?

You really can’t keep your computer from catching dust altogether. I suppose, try cleaning it every once in a while will do. Like you did, already.

It did it again. It’s gone now but I just vaccummed the fucking thing and it’s still doing it. It’s only like 8 months old!!!

Rofl. Vacuuming is what morons do. Learn about static electricity, and how vacuuming can affect it. BLOW the dust out with a compressor. If you continue to vacuum it, you will end up frying your components.

Canned air.

FUCK. Could vacuuming it once break it?

Anyway, it’s gotten a little worse. Strangely enough it doesn’t freeze if I’m playing a game. I’m going to go down to my local computer store and ask them if I could rent something to clean out my computer.

Could running my computer while it’s freezing hurt it?

I had a problem like this a while back. My DVD ROM drive was broke and was constantly trying to read discs. Took me a few days to realise because I hardly use my dvd drive.
Try unplugging all your non essential hardware, internal and external and see how it goes then, including memory sticks.

just buy canned air, take it outside, and spray the hell out of it.

I checked my tempurature and everything was under 110 F.

I ran memtest and it didn’t find anything. If it gets really bad I’ll try disconnecting my cd drive.

Edit:Fuckyesfuckyesfuckyesfuckyes!!!
I unplugged one ram card my cd drive and it stopped glitching!!! I plugged the Ram back in and it still works, so it’s either the cd drive or I had my RAM plugged in wrong, either way, IDGAF because it’s working!!!

Thak you Theledge!!!
If I still had any Shattered Horizon guest passes I’d give one too you.

If it comes back you might have to reinstall your OS to check if it’s a driver conflict.

Also check the BIOS and disable any devices that you don’t have like a floppy drive.

Otherwise the problem has to be your HDD or HDD controller.

Reinstalled my os. The problem is, if anything, worse and my resolution is stuck is 1024x768 and it keeps calling my monitor a generic non-PnP monitor. It won’t let me choose 1080x1920, my actual resolution. I can’t find any drivers newer than the one I have on my disk which I’ve installed over and over and it won’t let me change it from generic non-PnP monitor.

Please please help me, things are even worse than before!!!

Think you need a new PC mate. If your cpu is 6 years old I’m guessing pretty much of your system is too.
As for the resolution, did you install the latest nvidia/ati drivers?
And your problem with the glitches, nothing helped on here so I think your best bet is to take it to that shop you were on about.
Best of luck

It’s 8 months old. Right now I’m just waiting for my computer friend to come back, he’s been out of town. He can probably fix it, but I’ll have to pay him and he won’t be back for a while.
You probably got confused because I mentioned temporarily replacing my cpu with a 6 year old one. The local computer shop will probably needlessly wipe my computer, replace half my parts and then charge me twice what it cost to replace each one.

Reinstalled the driver and nothing happened. I figured out what the freezing is, it’s my RAM. If I take out half my RAM the problem lessens a lot, but doesn’t quite go away.

EDIT: Turns out my EDID is fucked up. EDID Unfortunately, the help blog is designed for Vista and I can’t find that directory on 7. I tried searching EDID, and my search should include hidden files, but I still can’t find it. I’m going to try and pirate one of the programs he listed, but it’d be nice if any of you knew how to find my EDID and fix it.

EDIT2: Fuck the solutions are hardware. Somebody help me please!!! I’m on the verge of smashing my fucking monitor.

EDIT3: Nvidia control panel correctly recognizes my display and let me apply 1920x1080, but it just goes black, says adjusting, goes black again, and does this for about 10 seconds before going back 1024x768.

Judging from the amount of times you’ve been touching, handling and removing various parts, and you lack of knowledge of static and precautions, I’d say there’s a very good chance that if your hardware wasn’t stuffed before, it is now. You DO know that PC hardware is very sensitive stuff, and just TOUCHING things like RAM can send a tiny static charge from your hand and fry the hardware, right? Have you been using an anti-static strap? Or at least ensuring you earth yourself? Not doing work on the carpet or cloth etc. Not putting the parts on carpet etc because they too often hold a static charge? Not walking around in socks on carpet while handling sensitive hardware? The list goes on, and I’m guessing you haven’t been as vigilant as you probably should have, right?

Might be time for a new PC…

I handle PC parts all the time, I don’t think I’ve ever killed something with static, I accidentally scratched a motherboard with a screwdriver once and it broke, but never with just static.
