Coil Gun

So I was thinking about making a coil gun :freeman: and i should have enough money to buy all the components after Christmas, I was just wondering if any one had any circuit diagrams? preferably with values.

I’ll make a time-lapse of the construction and also a video of it in use.

I suspect if you can’t even be bothered to Google for instructions you probably aren’t up to the task of making something like a coil gun. I await your appearance on Fail Blog with interest.

I’d prefer something tried and tested than something i found on electrocuteyourself.com

get some of these and a coil

“Einzelpreis: 789,73 €”

Is that seventy eight thousand nine hundred and seventy three Euro?

No, its 789 euro

Easiest way to make it is with a coil of copper wire around a metal stick. Stick a washer on and turn on the power, you have a good gun.

Sorry I don’t have values or more detailed instructions, this was a physics experiment from a few years ago :stuck_out_tongue: I remember it worked impressively though. Start with Flemming’s right-hand rule

Forgot about the left/right hand rules!
Don’t want it to backfire at all XD
Would it not be the thumb rule? with the fist as coil direction and the thumb as force?

Make a rail gun instead.

It’s hard to tell if you’re joking or not.

Either way, not even real scientists have gotten the railgun down-pat. I doubt this guy could do it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Making the ammo would be insane.

You could fire anything from it :stuck_out_tongue: .

I saw one on the Discovery channel. It was really big but really cool.

this guy has a lot of high voltage experiments including a coil gun:

Just don’t kill yourself by accidentally touching one of the capacitors charged to 2000 V. Oh and a few hundred Amps too. And make sure you don’t overload anything because they can melt, burn, and explode.

“I’m sure it doesn’t matter which way the capacitor goes in :retard:”
:aah: BOOM

Just wrap a copper wire around an iron pole (small one, we used to use a clamp stand). Put a washer over the top when current is flowing. If you can feel it pushing back, it’s the right way round. If not, just switch the poles on the power source (you need to use DC :stuck_out_tongue: )

The damn thing has to be magnetic else you can’t fire it out…

Edit: That or the power requirements are astronomical for it to generate a magnetic field powerful enough to shoot a non-magnetic item out… it’s impractical.

so… a coil gun is like a tazer?

EDIT: oh, nevermind, its an electromagnetic gun that shoots stuff

Best gun we ever made was an air powered one. We had a pump, a length of pipe and a valve. Put a piece of putty in, close the valve, go nuts on the pump and open the valve. We smashed one of those safety shields you get in a chemistry lesson :stuck_out_tongue:

Coil gun sounds a lot cooler than it really is, but we did dent the ceiling with one (our physics teacher was a massive legend)

Yeah just for anyone who doesn’t know a coil gun fires metal projectiles by generating a magnetic field with an electromagnet which draws the projectile quickly through the tube, the magnet is short-lived so the projectile doesn’t get stuck in the field and continues out of the end of the tube.
