Cinematic Effects in BM

Hello, I am new to this forum, and in fact it’s the only forum I am registers to. I’ve been following the mods development for about two years and the screen shots look amazing.

Anyways, I was wondering if the team plans to program any new cinematic effect into the game?

Cinematic Physics are already in the mod. You can see them in action if you watch the full-length trailer at the point where the Tentacle smashes through the window.

They will appear in the game, fortunately!

Edit: Mod beat me :frowning:

Answered in short order.
Welcome by the way. In the future try asking little questions like this in the Got a Question thread. You’ll probably get answers direct from developers that way.

He said “cinematic effects” not physics. Those are usually exaggerated effects that make things look like a cheezy action movie scene rather than real life.

Dias knows what I’m talking about.

Before and after Cinematic Effects.

you mean like…color correction?

uh no

That is color correction…

However, this is an example of cinematic physics,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0WTQFsd2d8 ( crappy, but it works )

Well, I was talking more about excessive depth-of-field, lens-flare, and screen-distortion on taking damage kind of things. Generally those things in modern FPS’ that claim to be realistic but end up just being a pain in the ass.

Black Mesa won’t be using film grain and similar effects because it’s not supposed to be like a move, but color correction might be used for atmosphere.(not entirely sure)

I’m thinking of the scene in, I think it was Episode 2, where you get to the bridge with all those abandoned and wrecked cars and the Charger, and, after a certain point, the bridge begins to tilt the other direction with the support beams twisting, buckling, and breaking…

I’m guessing that’s what cinematic effects are.

^ Thnx, I was mainly thinking of film grain, color correction, dust, lens filters, overexposure, and blur.

I know already BM will probably include color correction, and overexpose because their trailer shows it.

That’s the cinematic physics.

Edit: ninjad

When I first read that BM would have “cinematic effects”, my first thought was “oshit gaiz, it’s Max Payne and his bullet time!” I actually thought that the devs were implementing “dramatic” cutscenes…for example, shoot down that chopper with a rocket launcher…and suddenly, the camera jumps onto the back of the rocket as it flies in slow-motion into the chopper, whereupon the camera rotates around slow-motion explosion.

I’m so glad I was wrong.

I am too
On the topic, what other visual effects will you apply to the mod, other then color correction?

No, those were merely effects applied to the trailer itself to make it more interesting. Black Mesa itself will not have those ‘features’.

Just do a brown overlay and you should be fine.

It’s so realistic

Holy shit, you mean that’s in-game? I thought it was a fucking photo.

(of the shit factory)

That’s not what real life looks like at all: it has much more film grain.

There is also a great lack of blur. Because blur is fuckin’ realistic.

brb framing it
