Because something cannot be perfect or even near perfect, it shouldn’t be done. If that were the case, we wouldn’t have gotten out of our caves. His arrow shooting machine? If the machine hits the bullseye 99 times, he would suggest that we see if that’s simply 99 out of ten thousand (1% accuracy rate). Or if that exactly same machine hits the bullseye 99,999 times, he would suggest that the machine STILL has a 1% accuracy rate (99,999 times out of 10,000,000 times). Nothing will ever be perfect so he’ll move the goalposts to show that, when something DOESN’T work, it is representative while the many times it DOES work, well, that’s not important.
Because your leap from the brain being wired for altruism to equating it to the human race being selfless in it’s majority is so much more valid. (that’s sarcasm in case you missed it)
WE are a selfish species by nature. We as a species are wired for self preservation, the most selfish of all traits. Evolution has shown this as has human history. We do whatever we can to perpetuate our gene pool and ensure that our own species carries on; even if it’s at the expense of other humans, animals, plants and the earth. We are stripping this planet clean and leaving it a husk of dirt all in the name to preserve our way of life. We kill, we war, we do anything in our power to see that we remain at the top of the food chain. WE ARE A SELFISH SPECIES.
If you cannot see this then your a moron who truly does not understand a goddamn thing.
And as for your kids crack, again, your a moron for making the assumption I’m some young kid. Because you literally have no idea whatsoever.
Now I’m done with you and I’m done with soup. I’ve reached my quota of entertaining morons for the year.
Edit: Millions of years of human evolution and thousands of years of human history trump your meager ‘hypothesis’ based on several decades of study. You lose. Accept it, live with it. It’s a part of life.
Rabbiddog, the planet is basically run by less than 1% of the world population. The planet being stripped bare and such is largely the fault of those in power abusing their power to become wealthier.
In other words, a very small percentage of the world’s population is responsible for a very large percentage of the bad shit that happens to the world, which makes that argument null and void.
I beg to differ. You have a computer don’t you (obviously), a home or place to sleep, car, bike maybe, food. Worldly possessions to make your life more comfortable? Well where do think the resources to manufacture it, to ship it and the stores you buy it from all come from? Do you honestly think you, we all, play no part in that scenario?
Think for a moment man, don’t put yourself in the other twos shoes. Step outta that narrow hallway.
Yes I did see his last line, and I agree. I am narrow minded, no need for me to expand my mind with the problems of the world when all they lead to is misery and despair.
And danielsangeo: if large scale charity had a 99% chance of being successful, I’d probably consider wasting my money on it. But as it stands now, I see no reason to even think about giving money.
I see. Charity leads to misery and despair. Selfishness, therefore, leads to cheer and delight for those in desperate need?
That’s because you have unrealistic expectations. Charities are extremely effective when managed well. Are there charities that aren’t managed well and do not stick to their mission statement? Indubitably. Does that mean that charity, in and of itself, is bad? Well, if something that can be mismanaged and abused is bad, then EVERYTHING ON THIS PLANET is bad.
No, having compassion with every living soul on this planet leads to misery and despair on my part. I don’t want to sit around crying for all the bad things in this world. I don’t want to sob when seeing the news. I don’t want to go out on the streets with a bunch of people and have a march in order to remember the victims of some freak golf accident. If I was open to all those things, I’d be a pretty depressed little fuck at this point.
So yes, I prefer to stay narrow minded and be happy with what I have and with the people around me.
Getting rid of malaria may be a big thing to those that take part in that specific charity, but as I said before, it doesn’t tackle any of the other issues those people have. There’ll still be AIDS, murders, plunders, cholera, poverty, just plain old bad location (like Haiti). Whoopdedoo, malaria is gone, so what? The country’s still in a poor shape and the people there just have one thing less to worry about amongst a sea of potentially fatal stuff.
The act of charity isn’t bad, and I never stated so (or not intentionally at least), it’s obviously an act of good will. But I just think that it’s a pointless effort and that no amount of charity will ever solve the problems in this world.
Isn’t that most of the criticism I’ve received so far? That I do not care, that I do not feel, that I do not have “compassion”, that I’m a sociopath?
Apathy is a perfectly fine human treat, it saves me from sadness over anything that doesn’t matter to me.
Yes, and that’s only possible for the small scale charity (like helping bums), and that’s where my lack of care comes in to stop me from participating in this kind of charity.
I’m sure that, if you were in an unlucky situation, you would not want people, if they didn’t know you, to care about you and possibly help you through the situation so you can get your life back on track.
Next time your house catches fire and your child is in the house, tell me that you wouldn’t want a firefighter to rush into that house, risking their life to save a child they don’t even know.
Newsflash: I’m not in that situation. And if I ever manage to screw things up so badly that I do get into a situation like that, I’ll just turn to charity and demand help. There’s bound to be some fool that lives in a world of illusions in which the problems of a man are in no way his own fault.
Who knows, Sassyrobot may just help me get a home and a job 10 years from now.
If someone in your family close to you passed on, a loved one, a child? And you had a complete mental breakdown that resulted in you getting thrown out into the street, is that your fault?
