Changing the flashlight texture in Black Mesa?

Nope Black Mesa does not have one!

A textured flashlight can be added to black mesa by copying a texture to materials/effects

Name it flashlight001.vtf

you can get flashlight textures and change your flashlight like this, I messed about with it thought i would make a detailed flashllight and detail looks horrible on flashlights unless you want to call batman…

Anyway I made a flashlight texture after much messing around, the interesting thing is it will cast dynamic shadows when the texture is applied so it has a performance cost to it but It is a small thing I discovered, here is what I settled on after about 3 hours of mucking about. It’s softer than black mesa’s default flashlight too.

to uninstall remove the file vtf to revert bact to the plain dynamic light

The BM flashlight already does this though. It’s a projected texture and casts the same dynamic shadows as a standard projected texture.

Ah so it must grab a sdk default texture as there is no specific texture made.

Oh well my bad, anyway this one is softer

Yeah if you go to Source SDK 2007/vpks/depot_206_dir.vpk and open that up, you can navigate to hl2/materials/effects/flashlight001.vtf and see the default texture.

This one looks more like a flashlight, but as you said, your version is softer. It’s an interesting quick little mod that people can do if they want.

Yeah I have been mucking about with it…

I have improved the soft made it larger and done a color tinted light also

I updated the links on the first post

Oh, that one actually looks quite nice.

I am using the tinted one, and I really like it.

It’s like old skool but modernised and it’s quite moody too.

Could we see a screenshot of what these look like in game as compared to the stock flashlight so that we can compare the two?

Here

I wanted a more horror type flashlight and this is the best I could do, this is only the tinted flashlight pictured if you install either you can delete it and then it will revert back to the default flashlight,

I’ll just say use the tinted flashlight from the pack it’s better. but other people have also modded flashlights but I think the problem that they suffer from is too much detail, a whole day on focusing on flashlight design, taught me this. no hard edges and no perfect circle
