Case of the missing ram...

Okay guys, here’s the deal.

My PC has 2Gb of ram, in a single stick. Today I noticed that it was hanging alot, and that the system % of ram being used was constantly at about 50%. I thought it was strange, seeing as there were no heavy-duty tasks that I could see in task manager.

I checked the PC with SpyBot, and cleaned it out with cCleaner, then rebooted. I figured that as I always put it to ‘sleep’ instead of shutting down, this might be an issue. But it’s still under stress after all that. So now I’m looking in system information,and it says;

Installed Physical Memory 2.00Gb
Total Physical Memory 2.00Gb
Available Physical Memory 986Mb

Hmm.

The only thing that I’ve installed/uninstalled recently is a couple of windows updates, and ATI TrayTools (Which I removed, thinking it might be the cause).

Anyone have any ideas? :?:

put the ram in another slot

if that doesn’t help you’re gonna have to return that ram for a refund

Great, so either the rams fucked or the mobo slot is? :confused:

pretty much yeah, unless it’s some kind of special dual channel in 1 stick ram but I never heard of such a thing

The slot is still recognizing 2 GB so it might not be hardware related.

If you’re using Win7 isn’t that… well… normal?

[COLOR=‘Red’]Also, simply check in the task manager which processes use the most memory.

No W7 bashing here please. I’ve been using it since the first betas, and it’s fine. This problem only started occuring today.

Is it possible that the GPU is affecting it? fucking up the way it detects memory?

That’s why you always buy ram in pairs.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM… there’s nothing wrong with having 1GB of RAM used, I don’t see the problem there. If you have Windows 7 it’s perfectly normal, and I’m not saying that to bash Win7, it’s just that it manages RAM in a different way than, say, XP. It pre-loads a bunch of stuff, and if a program ever needs that RAM, it will just free it and let it go, it’s not hugging on the memory or anything.

If your system is hanging, it’s certainly not because you have 1GB of free RAM.

Samapico and Johnyo think I’m stupid…

I could tell instantly there was something different about my performance. This is a RECENT issue, is NOT to do with the fact that W7 hogs resources, and OF COURSE I looked at my task manager processes, it’s in my first post.

So you’re saying that the free ram differs greatly from what it should be according to all the used memory in task manager summed up. If that’s the case, it’s probably a hardware issue.

The used memory on my Win7 unit is consistently around 1Gb just idling and doing menial stuff, which I thought was normal. I have 4Gigs and right now about 30% is used. I would say that is fairly normal.

How exactly is it hanging? Just on your desktop, or during games?

TF2 was hanging like your grans tits (technical term! :3 ).

Desktop performance is pretty dire, it slows a chunk with just steam msn and chrome running. Atm I have Chrome, Msn, Steam, and Winamp running, and it’s at 77% :S It used to handle these at about 30%, as much as I can remember

I’ve checked everywhere, and the only place it says 1Gb is the ‘Available Physical Memory’ in systeminfo. EVERYWHERE else still says 2Gb, in the bios too. It’s a strange one…I’ve been fiddling around with the drivers on my HD4850, because it says total memory is 1786Mb, and it’s a 1Gb card. I think it might be sharing memory when it shouldn’t be, like I suspected.

Unfortunately, the drivers are being a right bitch and not installing -_____-

thinking back to before i bought the 4gb kit, yeah its normal ram usage for win7, so thats not your problem.
Open up everest and check all your temps and voltages for a start. If all your temps and voltages look fine, do a virus scan.

Mine never spiked that high, reinstall video card drivers and check out ur bios for that ram sharing function?
(edit) try safemode?

It’s not normal usage for me. People refuse to believe me when I say it used to be far lower. I’m not even doing anything taxing.temps and voltages are fine, checked them. I virus scanned already, nothing of note.

I’m not saying you’re stupid, and I’m not saying that Win7 hogs your resources… All I’m saying is having 1GB/2GB of used RAM doesn’t cause any performance issue, and it doesn’t slow down your system.
And… just saying: I have windows 7, I closed every program, and I still had 1.3GB/4GB used of RAM, even though the task manager only showed a total of about… 300MB.
Installed physical memory: 4.00GB
Total physical memory: 3.87 GB
Available physical memory: 2.47 GB

The ‘available physical memory’ in system info is ( total - used ), so it’s normal that you get less than 2GB

My other windows 7 pc has 6gb of ram, with windows 7, on first entry, all standard programs running, its uses 1536MB of DDR3 usually.

Ram is missing? does this mean the mod will be delayed even more? We need to find Ram!!
[COLOR=‘Black’]FUCKING crap joke whatever.

hurr durr what a funny joke

May be you’ve to buy new RAM.

@acade366’s sig : That’s terrible.
