Edit:

Too bad they couldn’t re-render the backgrounds, apparently they lost the original assets or something.

Still getting it tho, seems like a better deal than emulation.

Too bad they couldn’t implement some nicer materials.

Ideally I’d love to see an actual proper remake with either really high-res pre-rendered backgrounds or 3D levels, specially the latter, so they could make a special mode where after you beat the game in its original treatmeant, you can new game plus it in RE4 mode, completely rebalanced for third person style.

Still, I hope this means Capcom is interested in remaking 2 and 3 if this sells well.

Source? I thought the backgrounds were photos, so there were no assets to begin with.

Photos? No, they were pre-rendered CGI.

Did you–

Did you look at them?

They better keep the voice acting.

Are you assuming it’s the same voice acting from the original PS1 game?

I can understand a resolution lock if they insist on keeping the prerendered backgrounds as they would probably look pretty bad if rendered at higher resolutions. They should take the time to make the environments entirely 3D though. And it seems like they’re updating the remake, not remaking the original game.

It’s basically an HD port of the gamecube remake.

Also, what resolution lock?

The article says “There is no word on frame rate caps just yet, we also don’t know if PC’s will be given the option to run the game at resolutions higher than 1920×1080”. It’s not confirmed yet but seeing as how the backgrounds will have to be upscaled (and are likely already being upscaled at 1080p) they would look pretty awful at higher resolutions. And this is another Japanese port and a lot of them have issues with things like this. How did RE4 fair with resolutions over 1080p?

It faired well as it even supports 4K. Capcom PC ports have been fantastic for quite a few years now, no issues there.

I don’t think Capcom will limit the PC version resolution wise but framerate might be capped to 30 by default, seeing as the game had motion bits in the pre-rendered backgrounds and those were rendered at 30fps for the gamecube and they’re even limiting all the console versions to 30fps, even tho they’re all perfectly capable of running this at 60, so it’s possible that the timing goes all to shit when they try to run at 60.

That would be funny if that happens.

Resident Evil (Windows 95) wants to run at 60 on my PC, but that makes it 4x speed. 30 is an improvement for this remake though, as the original ran at 15.

But it already ran at 30 on the gamecube.

I’ve seen these threads pop up elsewhere and it seems a lot of people don’t even know the 2002 gamecube remake exists.

I don’t think it even received as much marketing as RE4 back then.

Which is a shame, since many people consider REmake the best game in the series.

It undoubtedly is. The first game of a series is always regarded as the most special. Damn, can’t wait to throw my money at Capcom.

Actually, most people regard RE2 better than RE1 in the context of the PS1 games but this Gamecube remake of RE1 improved on the original game so much, that it was generally elevated for best in the series over RE2 and 4.
