Is there not a setting in Video to use a different renderer? Try each setting and maybe it will help.
I’m trying to wrap my head around how goldsrc lags for you but source does not. How can that be? How can an older gfx engine that requires less PC horsepower lag but source engine requires more PC horsepower and does not lag?
scratches head
On my last PC (which was still beefy by HL1 standards) the Direct3D mode stuttered where as the OpenGL mode worked fine, maybe it’s that
Now matter what the fuck you do, you’ll still be waiting for Black Mesa.
Goldsrc is an older engine, plus my computer kinda sucks, older engines can have problems.
I realise I might be teaching my granny how to suck eggs here, but is the goldsrc version fully patched?
I’ve always had some problems with the Steam version of HL1 (the game pausing for a second after loading) but I assumed that was a common bug from them injecting content server ads into the game.
- There already was at least one thread like that
- You can play Half-Life about 20 times before Black Mesa comes out
Actually it’s a command to prevent speedhacking, no reason why valve even put it there but you can get rid of it by typing clockwindow 0 in the console.
I really wish this was in the Steam version of HL1. I miss this so much. It may not be as efficient, but damn was it cool, and I felt it really fit the theme of the game.

EDIT: Found my HL1 CD from 98
Also I suggest you try Software or OpenGL. Trust me, there is not one PC in the world software rendering should not work on. And if it still has problems, well then you are right and your PC really does suck
Play Half-Life first then come back and tell us what you think…
HL: Source is good if you plan on using the console heavily and care about lighting and other source features such as ragdoll and physics. It also has better sound effects too. But if you care about mods and don’t mind a bad console, go for the original. You could also try to find a WON CD version of the game. I have mine from back and the day and still play it on occasion but I really prefer the source version. In that version, the console works, you can play mods, and you get the original, cooler user interface.
Pick whichever version you’d like but don’t stick around for Black Mesa. I don’t think it’ll be that much longer but then playing Black Mesa will be more fun because you get the nostalgia factor.
Alright I’ll just buy Half-Life Source. Thanks for the advice.
There is nothing wrong with the original console, you just have to type restart after you’ve typed sv_cheats 1.
In all of the Half Life games the console closes a lot when I just type one letter. I’ll open it up, type like “s” and the game will resume. When I go back and type another letter it erases the first one and then closes again and it keeps going like that until it eventually decides to work. Never been able to figure out why exactly it does that.
It never did that to me, strange…
That’s strange, never had that happen before to me.
Also a while back I found out you can extract the half-life.GCF from steam and get it working like the WON version, unfortunately you need to use quite a bit of DLLs and the exes from the WON version so I suppose that doesn’t really count, because it’s like just moving the content
Waste money with your ignorance.
He said he already has the original, and it don’t work.
