can black mesa bring life to enemy soilders

one of my biggest disapointments with Half-Life 2 was the fact that the combine were so unhuman compare to the HECU of the first one. for example when you threw a grenade they didnt run for their life they simply joged slowly away. did they sneakly place grenades no did they flush you out with grenades and poping round corners no they did not when you shot them did they limp of feel pain no. will the soilders in black mesa be even more realistic or on par with the HECU? did anyone else notice this?
please dont lock I AM being serious

Welcome to the forums rayman, first off I want to mention that I am shocked someone hasn’t already picked that name. Secondly, to answer your question: the DEVS have addressed the problems mentioned, making HECU more realistic, smart, etc. I’m sure someone will post links or quotes after me to confirm for you (I’m too lazy).

Also, please do a search next time, because that question has been asked a lot, and searching helps to prevent flame.

I was not sure what to search for it wasnt in the FAqs I was gonna but a disclaimer but like you im to lazy =)

Well, they are trans-human, so of course they were unhuman compared to HECU.

Actually, they did. When you hide somewhere like a tight room they throw a grenade in and then the shotgun guy comes since his weapon is specialized in close combat.

Since they have been drastically altered by the Combine, it’s possible that they aren’t affected by pain that much as humans are.

good points I dont know what your getting at with the shotgun guys thing. but the were possibal explantions of course but it dimminshed the value a little

Edit :s oz for double posting i pressed to back button when i didnt quite evalueate

Its also the first source engine build, which is a really old. Everyone thinks source is this mega giant that can create anything. It has restrictions, and its not an unlimited source of power.

Also, if I have this correctly the orange box and the hl2 build are basicly two diffrent engines with two diffrent capiabilitys. So, what you see from hl2 may because of restrictions and they could of just left it like that when they changed to the orange box.

GoldScR is older and it could mange,

This guy needs his own Google translate.

Well, I do agree that they could be improved, but I don’t think they were worse than HECU.

Here’s something from OverWiki about the tactics against Combine Soldiers, which also tells about their AI.

Maybe its just the more open enviorments of the second Half-life that let the combine down still they rarely seem to throw grenades.

After you discover that Judith works for the Combine, and then Alyx stays behind, in that area with 3 turrets that you can place against Combine. Then a huge amount of enemies start to flood the area. It is one of the most exausting fights in HL2.

Anyway, I discovered that the best way to deal with them in that fight is to hide in one of the small rooms and wait for them to attack. Since there is only one entrance they can’t attack you from behind, but they are coming so fast you hardly have a chance to reload. So, in that room they constantly threw grenades at me. Also shotgun soldiers would come around a corner, while the Pulse Rifle soldiers tend to stay away from you.

They’re mind controlled, heavily modified cybernetic super-soldiers. What do expect them to do, start screaming and crying whenever you toss an empty pop can at them?

@Rayman: Uh… Talking back about the HECU, did you read this?

https://wiki.blackmesasource.com/index.php/HECU_Marines

There are many information about the HECU.

EDIT: Merged the information from JK’s post to Wiki article.

My biggest interest in HECU behavior is hit reaction and bullet impact.
Can source know that the model has taken damage and where on the body?
Can source present an option of model animations/behavior depending on damage taken?
Is ragdoll only implemented in “dead” models? We all know if we were shot, our bodies would never act/react as a stiff statue. If a soldier catches a round in his biscep, it would be nice to see his arm flail and perhaps toss/drop his weapon while he’s stumbling backwards.

I ask mainly because of my play style. If I encounter a squad of solders, I will try and send 4-6 rounds at a target than aim for the next chest/head. Obviously I may not kill every individual the first time, so what are the possibly injured soldiers doing while I attempt to drop his squadmates? It frustrates me when an enemy is impacted by multiple bullets but his behavior reflects the opposite.

I hope there are multiple behavioral options depending on damage. Maybe I missed so hes simply returning fire. Maybe hes on the ground writhing in pain or trying to crawl to cover. Perhaps he is limping on one leg, down on a knee about to pass out, fumbling with a pistol instead of reloading his mp5, reacting to a hole is his shoulder from my glock, etc. Is stuff like this possible?

IIRC Soldier of Fortune 1 or 2 implemented decent hit reaction. Oh and I remember watching soldiers react to limb damage in Perfect Dark lol.
Also, that post about the mess of combine AI code is enlightening btw. I always kind of thought combine were a little “slow to think”.

It’s actually not that hard; all you had to do was set up the turrets in front of the windows and they would keep the soldiers completely occupied.

I would believe the answer is yes, as in LFD2 the zombies gibbed differently based on where they were hit. If you shot them in the leg with a weapon that caused it to gib, the leg would be blown of and it would fall flat on its face. Shot an arm off and they would continue to attack you.

As for your other questions, I have no idea.

The problem is that they come in swarms, and manage to get to the turrent before it can kill them all. Besides, there are 3 turrets and 4 entrances, so they can easily come in the 4th entrance behind turret and knock it down.

Wait, windows? No, I’m talking about a fight after that. Not before you meet with Alyx and see Dr. Mossman talking to Breen, but after that. There was an infinite ammo crate for SMG there, I think.

EDIT: Oooh! I just watched this walktrough. At 5:08 the player says to bring a turret with you. I didn’t think of that. Well, it should be easier then, having 4 turrets will keep all entrances covered.

Another EDIT: hmm, there is the water part… I thought the 4-entrance fight is immediately after watching Dr. Mossman… it mixed up im my head. But you can still take the turret with you to cover all 4 entrances.

Oh, wrong part. Yeah, it’s tough, but there are some great tactics. My favorite is to set up in one of open cells.

A similar thread was made before. The conclusion was the HECU only look smarter (more human) because they are harder to kill. The Combine soldier need one or two shot before dying and you never see if they act stupid smart or not.
