People who don’t wipe/brush are just as bad. I know this kid that doesn’t bother with either of those, yet he has glorious locks of hair, but it is nullified by the fact that he regularly applies various skin-busting ointments in public.

Yes, you are right. I often say “use extreme measures only on extreme cases”. If you exaggerate on your reaction to simple situations, you look unstable and unprepared to deal with it. The kids will perceive that and won’t comply. Then, as things are still out of control, you will make even more exaggerated threats and go even more unstable. Who haven’t seen a teacher in school that screams like hell, promising to send everyone to the principal’s office and no one cares about? You have to stay calm and sober always.
For instance, if I were a teacher and I saw a group of kids bullying some unfortunate guy, I would choose one of them (probably the “leader”). Later I would ask his help for something, like to organize or stamp papers. All the time that I need help, I would ask his help, nicely, just to get closer to him. Then, that “barrier” between teacher and student would vanish. I believe he could then stop the bullying and start studying. Or not, who knows, but at least I would have tried.

Well, what can I say? Sooner or later, he will forget about it and move on with his life. He probably already did that. The question, however, is if he will try to face his problems or not, and by problems I mean things that make him unhappy or unsatisfied. Well, in the end, isn’t everyone like that?
I believe the key is to keep trying, and in different ways. After all, happiness means to keep reaching your goals. You will always have a new challenge, therefore you will never be “happy ever after”. Also, there are things that you cannot do directly. In this case, you need to create goals that are easier for you to reach. For instance, if you have trouble to talk to strangers, then try talking more to people you know, and do that for a long time. After that, try talking to your friends’ friends. At some point, you’ll understand you don’t really need to talk to strangers. At that point, talking to strangers will seem natural when it is needed (like when you find guys playing in a giant chess board in the bus station and you want to play as well 
).
I think all you can do now, Catz, is to be a mother and be there when he needs support, or reprehension.
Doesn’t happen, I’m an introvert too (IRL). It couldn’t tell you if it because of bullying, but it certainly contributed to it, there are other reasons too however. I don’t think that I’ll ever change.

I’ll preface this by saying I’ve so far never been bullied in my life. I have no idea why, because I’m really a pretty good target, at least when I was younger, but hey, thats how life goes.
In any case, I think this is all something of a moot point. No matter how hard authorities try to crack down on bullying, it will never stop. Its just the natural result of two groups with differences, one with superior strength. Its been that way since the beginning of humanity, and will be that way until the last human dies.

an important thing for parents to remember its that your kid’s bullies are kids also and not totally accountable for their actions and your fucked up revenge fantasies are not okay.
Just to be clear, I meant “forget” as a different thing than “dealing with the consequences”. For better or for worse, the consequences stay for a long time, if not forever. That said, you should be able to get by nevertheless. In the end, they make you just a different person rather than a psychologically problematic person. Different in qualities, defects and anything else that defines you as a human.
For instance, a point in common between me and Sassy is that we don’t like to pass by when there is someone bullying another person.

You are definitely wrong. From what you guys are saying, I can tell that the schools I used to attend were not as bad as those. Bullying is common but not natural. The way to deal with it is not to “crack down”, but to deal with each circumstance in a convenient way, like super nanny does.
In my high school, there was no bullying at all, anyone would talk to me without prejudice. The difference? They were more interested in studying than in my colleagues in elementary school, so they didn’t focus their attention in getting other folks’ lives miserable.
I used to be beaten in Kindergarten, but that might have had a reason: the teachers there used to hit the kids. Once one colleague of mine was forced to take his clothes off in front of the other kids. Teach violence and disrespect and that is what you get back.
In my school, on the other hand, there were a few occasions where kids showed their stupidity to a maximum. Once, in the school’s courtyard, the cheers from two different football (soccer) teams organized in two groups and began to provoke each other, sometimes a few would go to the other group to hit. After the event, the teachers reprehended the classes involved. That did not happen again. Once that lazy principal was changed to an efficient one, stupidity began to diminish slowly.
I’ve been to 5 elementary schools and 3 high schools, 90% of the time anyone who attempted to interact with me was making fun of my name or the 2mm mole under my chin. Then I would proceed to beat them unconscious and have to change schools again.
