BMS Update suggestion/question?¿?

Hey all. I don’t know if I’m going to get yelled at or not, but I am just curious as to why the BMS team does not release an update at least once a month.

A quick twitter/Forum post:

“Hey all, we’re working jobs, tending to children, living our lives and working a tiny bit on BMS level design. <3 Thanks for being patient!”

Would be about eight thousand times better than not release any(noticeable) updates whatsoever.

I’d appreciate well thought out comments (e.g., stay away from comments like: “Any time the DEVs spend giving updates is time away from the mod”).

I’m assuming at least one of the DEV members has enough time to type a one-two sentence twitter update once a month.

Simple updates like this could really help a lot of the people waiting for the mod, and really give new interesting topics to discuss.

With that ‘fake update quote’ I wrote, I can come up with several topics about what they are working on off the top of my head, and lots of interesting/fun conversations to think about too.

This updating about 1x a year has really made so many of my close friends loose complete interest in this mod.

Anyways, my suggestion is that the DEVs do an update a bit more often. I’m not talking about media or videos, just simple ASCII. quick, efficient, painless!

This doesn’t even matter though. first and foremost because no-one getting paid for this so a few less people playing isn’t an issue. But mostly because when BM eventually does come out, most of the people that “lost interest” will hear about it and get it.

Long term, the only change is there are less posts on the forums asking for updates.

Edit: Also, in the subforum list, this Thread shows up as titled “BMS Update…”. People are so gonna get excited about that.

Raminator pretty much said everything. Also keep in mind, they’ve been working on Black Mesa for six years now, at this point in the development, it is better to spend time on the mod then to make more updates. Raminator also answers questions every day, so I do not see any reasons to make updates (expect when the release date is given and what patches are made for the game).

Also visit this link about the subject:
https://www.wiki.blackmesasource.com/General_FAQ#Please.21_Please.21_Could_you_release_a_demo_or_media_updates.3F.3F.3F

… that link has nothing to do with that subject… , what hes saying is he wants updates not media releases or demos…

It takes 2 or 3 minutes a week to type a quick little update. Something like that is not going to take anything away from the mod.

OK, here is the update:

They worked on it today.

Fine now?

Yeah… no…

I stopped caring about the mod a long time ago. I’m only here for the forum. tbh I dont think it would be very fun to play at this point.

q.e.d.: it’s never enough.

@ram: that post of yours would actually make a good sig, so you wouldn’t have to type it all over again

Edit: oh, yeah inb4lock

I undestand you, “wagmauler”. I go the main page every goddamn day hoping that something besides the “SPEAK UP” section on it changed just a tiny little. But, no, I always see the “Black Mesa is some hot shit” quote and the “Charger testing” video wich was uploaded nine months ago.
But I also undestand “Raminator”. Everytime they do some kind of update (media, video, little tweet, whatever) some people go like "ZOMG I n3w 1t guise, you r h4lfw4y troug da mod devlpmnt, u didn’t evn strted wrkin on xen, at this pace the mod iz gonna be relsd on like 20XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!111oneone :’(:’(:’( imma nvr gunna play it coz i lost intrst in it> :frowning: > :frowning: > :frowning: " and stuff. So yeah, is better to just be patient and keep discussing on the forum to battle our boredom and eagerness.

I guess everyone has their own way of doing things. They seem pretty adamant that they don’t want to provide updates, so it’s a take it or leave it situation.

My advice: pick up some cheap old classics you never got round to playing and forget about black mesa until it comes out

And you didn’t even care about the happy birthday thread i made for you.

Happy birthday.

So…rather than something that actually indicates real progress and a realistic view of how the mod is actually progressing, he wants a meaningless Twitter update confirming what everybody who posts in this forum already knows from seeing Dev comments? Very good then.

Everybody who posts here more than once a year sees so much Dev activity it would be impossible for us to doubt that the mod was, at the very least, dead. Even if progress isn’t rapidly progressing at a voracious pace, there’s still so much interest it would be fanciful to believe that it would collapse in the interim before the guestimated release date.

That means that a Twitter update would satisfy three groups of people; a) Youtubers, b) whiny trolls and c) people who care about the mod, but are too lazy to spent 5 minutes checking out the forum activity, so go and whinge about a lack of updates. Groups ‘a’ and ‘b’ will never be satisfied by any news other than a release, meaning that there’s no point at all in satisfying them. The last group get the message when we make posts like these, but all of these groups will download the mod on release, meaning that posting further updates is useless, just because it will only appease them in the short term and feed fuel to the fire in the long term.

a release would not satisfy group a or b. all the proof you need is watching the youtube channel remarks before and after release. Mark my words. some folks are just not happy unless they are pissing on something or someone.

I said this ages ago, I hope you’re not expecting anyone to listen to you. :stuck_out_tongue:

ok…
After Black Mesa gets released… will you give us a summary report on why it got delayed and what you did during the delayed timeline or will you keep it as a dirty little secret?

How is that even relevant? They don’t have to justify shit to no one.

Most developers don’t give out many details about development.

Does Valve give monthly updates about how Portal 2’s development is going?
Would we consider it normal for Valve to say “We just completed a chapter in Episode 3, it’s looking really cool but there’s a bug with the elevator that we are fixing.”? It would take them no effort to do so, but they still don’t do it.

This also applies for other companies such as Microsoft or Apple, they don’t tell you how their new OS is going along. They may give you some info just so you know they’re working on it, but you won’t know much until the release. Their only advantage is that they can give you a release date and stick to it, but that’s only because this is all they do all year, so they can actually predict it (but even then they can get it wrong).

More open companies like Google might be - obviously - more open. They often give updates about what they’re working on, but that’s their choice.

It makes sense for the Black Mesa team to not update more often than other companies would. We can actually talk to them on these forums, which is pretty cool in itself. You can’t do that with Valve much.

With a project like this, it’s impossible to predict things and it pisses you off when people act like annoying dogs waiting for food. We would all love updates, and we would all like to know much more about everything, but we have to understand that this is the way the world works, and it’s not just the Black Mesa team that’s keeping information secret.

Raminator’s been a bad, bad boy.

That’s why I said “WOULD”.
but I guess it is irrelevant. sorry. just delete the comment then.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
