Blue Screen!

My computer bluescreens every time I try to open a map in hammer! I am going to reinstall Hammer and see if that works, but if it doesn’t I’m not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Check your graphics drivers are up to date (not likely to be the problem, but easy to check).

More difficult, but much more likely: RAM defect. Get a memory tester like Memtest86 and give it a go.

What was the last thing you did when Hammer was working?

Is this an old version of Hammer or Source SDK Hammer?

Does it only happen Source SDK is configured for a particular game/engine?

Have you tried refreshing your Source SDK content?

Have you tried varifying the content of the ‘tool cache’?

Have you tried deleting and reinstalling Source SDK?

These are just some of the things I would have tried or asked myself before asking others. :3

Sorry, it just kind of bothered me that it was bluescreening, but anyway, I will try all those, but first I will update my graphics drivers, I was using an older version because when I tried to upgrade it last time it made it so my comp would only run in safe mode.

Also, something that may or may not be related, every time I run Zune software it crashes.

EDIT: Installed latest display drivers from Nvidia and now the computer won’t let me raise my resolution or color above the lowest setting. All the colors are wrong and Hammer editor won’t even start, is there a way to fix this, or do I just have to go back to the old drivers that came with my graphics card?

Edit #2: Zune works now, so I think the old display driver was the culprit, but I still can’t get my display settings above the lowest, all the colors are horribly off and everything is giant.

Edit #3: Got sick of staring at the horrible resolution and color so I reinstalled my old driver. hammer and Zune software are working, but I would still like to get my display drivers updated if it is possible.

Unrelated but related to blue screens: Will the lobby computer have a BSOD like in HL1?

I’ve repeatedly reinstalled my old driver, but every time something doesn’t work. Some times one of my games will work, and other times it bluescreens. sometimes Hammer works, sometimes it doesn’t. Same with Zune software. I dled Memtest and it said it was the Windows version, but all the files said Linux and wouldn’t run. I really have no idea what to do now. Please help me. :’(:[> :frowning: :frowning:

The easiest way to use MemTest is to use the bootable CD version. Burn the .iso to a CD, set your BIOS up so it boots from CD before HD, restart, it’ll do the test.

If you run a memory test while the OS is running, it can only test the memory which the OS lets it access, so it’s not ideal. That’s why the best way to go is a bootable CD.

Alright, I’ll try it.

Do I have to use some special burning function on Dameon tools? If so, how do I do it?

He’s gotten it again…

No, I don’t think it is a virus.

Anyway, It’s getting worse. yesterday I was Playing deadspace, but today I tried to play it again and it bluescreened.

What card are you using? I had a similar problem with the Nvidia 8400. Some card’s just have terrible drivers.

9800 gtx.

Something I probably should have mentioned earlier is my os is pirated, but it seems not to have any glitches, so I don’t think it is related to the problem.

Edit: Alright, finally got the latest display driver successfully installed, but Zune software will still not work, so something is still wrong. Hammer is working, but if it’s anything like the last few times, it will blue screen by tomorrow.

this happened to my old HP. The graphics card started crashing randomly and later died. The problem may be hard drive or GPU related. Im guessing GPU. Btw what are ur specs?

9800 gtx, 28 ghz processor, 4 gigs ddr3 ram, 583 watt power supply.

Anyway, I think the problem is fixed, everything works, but Crysis Bluescreened twice after a while of playing, but that could just be from pirating it.

P.S., your avatar and name so remind me of my brother, he has a massive jewfro. :stuck_out_tongue:

These days, you should never see a blue screen of death unless you have either dodgy drivers, or faulty hardware. This ain’t win98 any more.

You realize iso’s are CD images? You need to burn it to an actual CD, not just mount it. Then restart your computer with the CD in and boot from it.

damn I wish I had one of those 28Ghz cpu’s :[

Too bad when you turn it on it melts through your floor.
