Black Mesa World Record Speedrun!

Hello there! I’m Maxx and I currently hold the world record for the fastest one-sitting completion of Black Mesa without the use of scripts or cheats. Surprisingly, there are tons of unique tricks in Black Mesa compared to Half Life 2. In BM there is Bunny hopping and object boosting, both keep true to the original half-life name!

Well enough talking, here is the run itself: link

If you have any questions regarding the run or any of the tricks I do, ask here!

Just some things to keep note of when watching the run, I mess up a couple of tricks here and there and I even crash once, but that doesn’t stop me from getting the world record at 1:24:53.12!

EDIT:
Also want to add in that I wasnt the one to create the route, most routing and tricks were done by Elgu, Xanderstrike, D4rwin, Colfra, and Tomsk45. The only route I’ve created was in the Blast Pit tentacle silo area with the barrel boost and mega willclimb which saves about 20 seconds or so since you don’t have to wait for the doors to open/close.

Dear god, I wouldn’t think it possible to beat it that fast.

I’d love to see a segmented speedrun of BM some time.

Very nice.

Have you submitted this to the Speed Demos Archive? That is assuming Black Mesa even qualifies in its unfinished state…

Speed Demos Archive does not allow the use of save/load in runs. Doing a run of this game without save/loads is possible but very hard so I doubt i’ll ever achieve such a goal and simultaneously reach a new world record time.

There are still a LOT of things to improve but very nice nonetheless. Speedruns at this point are pointless because Xen will be added, and there will probably be many updates coming. But at least you can practice a lot of tricks right now.

Maybe the developer viewing this thread could put ABH back in, or even better; add general bunnyhopping.

ABH in this game would be crazy, however, I think most of Black Mesa consists of precise tricks rather than movement like HL2 or HL2:EP2.

I’m also wondering if the 2013 SDK or newest source engine has bhop or ABH… hmmm…

Yeah, that’s true. ABH would be nice, but since Black Mesa’s environment is mostly indoors and partially cramped in some areas, I can understand how messy it could be. This game has some pretty tricky spots.

How did he get that info on the top right of the screen showing position, map name, and so on?

cl_showpos 1
cl_showfps 1

(I think)

I’ll try it. Thanks!

Forgive my ignorance, but what does ABH stand for?

Advanced Bunny Hop. Bunnyhopping is a technique in some games that allow you to pick up forward speed by continually jumping over and over again. ABH, is a way to pick up even more speed by using a physics item and a glitch in the engine to pick up even more speed while bunnyhopping.

I think. Don’t quote me on that; another person might have better info.

I believe that is called object boosting, ABH is accelerated back-hop which exponentially increases your speed when jumping backwards while crouching and holding no other keys. More information on the technique can be found here: https://wiki.sourceruns.org/wiki/Accelerated_Back_Hopping

Was waiting for a refined run like this. Congrats on the time. Come post if you’re going to be streaming another run

Too bad it buffers so slowly…

I’m having no problems here.

I spent a bunch of time trying to prove that the blast pit exploding barrel skip could be done before we released, and I did it a few times. But in the end we didn’t fix it in time

Thanks for finding it haha.

…Though I did point out the skips in Anomalous Materials like the elevator ladder, which worked in HL1. That’s why it wont work here. :stuck_out_tongue:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
