Black Mesa Music

Minor key cello doesn’t sound too jolly to me, works perfectly IMO.

Sounds great to me. Jolly isn’t exactly how I would describe it. In fact it sounds notably less jolly than Valve’s closing theme.

Not jolly enough, IMO. I think this music would better fit the credits:

Half-Life End Credits

Seriously, Joel’s end credits music works really well for me. The original music was not anywhere near this sombre and bleak, and it would have made little sense if it had been. But having played the sequels, we have a very different interpretation of the events at Black Mesa: we know that Gordon’s final victory is largely Phyrric, that the events of Black Mesa leaves the planet decimated, and that there is nothing Gordon can do about it.

Could the mod’s readme include basic instructions on what to name the audio files and their Half-Life 1 equivalent tracks?

(I am afraid of too much mindblowing change at once to recognize it as still Half-Life! The music is a certain way to provide me with nostalgia. I intend to first play through Black Mesa with the original soundtrack, and then I’ll mix it up after the first time through.)

So, perhaps if you could, let us somewhere see somewhen a rough list of which track replaces what.

I finally tracked down the composer and got him to email me the MP3.
Here it is for anyone who wants it:

There’s no guarantee that the music will always occur in the same places as the original. And besides, there’s no way anyone can give you this information when the mod isn’t even finished yet.

I agree. AS a matter of fact, I am betting the only hint you will get is the name of the song itself.

I like Blast Pit the most. It’s fucking eerie, yet it’s beautiful at the same time. I love Topside, too.

Wow, man. Thanks a lot! Who on earth is this artist, by the way? Is he from Gearbox or just the Decay-PC-Port team? What other works have been published? Was this song officially in the Playstation version? What’s his name? Can I trust you?

Alright, fair enough, but if the song filenames aren’t in alphabetical order then perhaps we could be told what order the player is expected to trigger them in…

Although you still have the landmark scenes that cue music. Emerging from the drain pipes beneath the Abrams… walking out onto the cliff face… the credits…

I know something needs to play something during the tram ride, so just allow me the luxury of smoothly reimplementing Vague Voices. (and you better not leave the tram ride silent just to spite me! that would be blasphemy :stuck_out_tongue: )

His name is Brandon Blume, and no he doesn’t work for Gearbox or Valve. This isn’t the playstation version of the song, it’s a much longer remake. and much better in my opinion. Here’s his myspace, it has quite a few songs there so give him a listen. Also, he kind of looks like Gordon Freeman.:freeman:

This is definitely a rickroll cue, but I fear the banhammer.

Better just say that Joel’s music fits better than Rick Astley (because Joel rules and Rick drools) and leave it at that.

So one could possibly go in and change the BM soundtrack to the HL soundtrack if one fancied.

There’s no guarantee you’d be able to make it fit very well though. They aren’t going to have music necessarily in the same places as the original or evoking the same moods as the original. Would probably be a fair bt of work matching HL tracks with BM tracks to replace them in a way that sounded ok.

Personally, I’m not planning on replacing Joel’s tracks with the originals any more than I am planning on replacing any of the other in game sounds, the garg model, or the brick textures, etc.

Alright, so it seems apparent that some retrograding may be done but with considerable difficulty.

Raw_bean, with all of the great new content within Black Mesa, chances are your personal taste will likely find at least one thing unsatisfactory (in which case you should plan to mod even a tiny bit for yourself).

Some iconic sounds may not be replicated close enough for some fans, even if the spirit is the same. Let’s face it, HL1’s audio isn’t extraordinarily low-quality by most standards.

Here are some specific effects that are particularly vulnerable due to their iconic statuses:

  • Gonarch’s cries
  • Nihilanth’s voice
  • Tentacles’ singing

But, it would be irresponsible to assume those files won’t have improved or equatable counterparts until having witnessed them.

Given how much they’ve nailed the G-Man’s voice, I’d expect them to get the rest of the sounds pretty damn right too.

My only concern is the MP5’s sound. I know many said it was because the trailer cutted all bass in it, but the Garg’s roar was pretty much bassy IMO. So I have hard time figuring how the bass was cutted only in certain parts.

Impersonations are one thing, but whales are, frankly, beyond of the team’s grasp.

I hope…

Did I miss something?

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
