Black Mesa is released!

Nice, Kickass has almost 28,000 seeders as of now. Not bad for about 19 hours.

Well the fact that I spent my entire day playing this I can safely say this is the best mod I’ve ever played and one of the best games I’ve ever played. The attention to detail, the score… everything is just great. GREAT JOB GUYS!

Thank you very much!

I know it’s not high, I said it was abnormal for my GPU. I run my fan on near maximum.

Dev’s awesome job. This is absolutely amazing, like piss my wife off because I can’t stop playing it amazing.

Thank you Black Mesa Team

Just spent many hours playing. I just had to resurrect this old account (it was deleted eons ago) to say… I’m actually feeling a bit emotional right now. If you had told me back when HL was fresh and new in our minds that in distant 2012, a dedicated community would release a complete remake, true to the original both in similarity and in difference, I would simply have said, “no way”. But here we are. Proof, found in the proverbial gelatinous dessert. As I’m starting Blast Pit I can still hardly believe it. It’s like visiting your old childhood town with a group of old friends, both of which you haven’t really seen in a long time. Conversation just resumes as if nothing had happened, but the substance is, perhaps, a little more refined. Maybe you hear of your friends’ new successes and adventures. Maybe someone got married. Billy there even shaved his beard, but he’s still the Billy you got sent to the principal’s office with. I guess I’m getting a bit too philosophical about this but I can’t be the only one feeling this way. I’m going to stop playing now so I can get some rest; it just won’t do to play this one through while tired. It’s too easy to just get lazy and gloss by a couple rooms (they feel so natural!). Before I do so though, I’d like to thank the community (even the naysayers!) for making this possible. HL has really had a profound effect on many of us. I suppose I really shouldn’t be surprised that BM exists, come to think of it  AND THANKS AGAIN BM TEAM! Thanks for the frost on the walls where gas has leaked, thanks for the awesome animations, thanks for the astounding voice work, thanks for the completely immersive soundscape, thanks for the unbelievable score, thanks for the deliciously creepy and gurgly zombies, thanks for everything that is waiting to be discovered on my Nth playthrough, and, most of all, THANKS FOR MAKING THE FLASHLIGHT WORK LIKE A REAL FLASHLIGHT  Oh, and (AFAIK), thanks for not including the penis gib

TL;DR: BALCK MEAS! Mah childhood is happy! I wuv u community! I wuv u BM team! hugz

First two hours of playing the game, hands down, you guys did it.It was totally worth it,thank you Devs, needless to say the locker room was what made me smile.Liked the fact that you guys put your own developers name onto it,just like Valve did.

Fantastic job devs. Thanks a million!

Wow, that is awesome! Playing this for about 3 hours I’ve got very good impression. Well done guys, thank you a lot!

It’s really was worth waiting for that long time.

It’s like you tryed to make every corner on every level is interesting. So much details everywhere. As I see you cuted or changed everything that I don’t so like in the original and make things that I like even better. My favorite chapter in Office Complex is just priceless. In HL1 I wasn’t care much about npc’s but in Black Mesa, for some reason, I was try to make them go through that level alive and you make it possible!

And so much work on design - there is now not just bunch of rooms with boxes - I can see that every room have purpose. And houndeye never was so cool as in BM with real physics their sound waves just something really impressing. And music almost make me cry. And sounds. Actors did so good job - that intonations like in the first game!

Oh god - you really did it. You right now making history. If this game has flaws - I just don’t wanna see them.

I’m happy right now. Thank you very much for your hard work.
Waiting for Zen

The mod is literally fantastic… utterly brilliant. Cheers!

Good job guys! I play and can’t stop… Thank you very much!

Just beat it. Wow. It has it’s problems, but all in all it was an amazing ride. I’m going to be replaying this tomorrow all the way through again. Seriously, wow.

Anyone else try and DL from the German mirror Chip.de? The zip appears to be 3.1gb as opposed to the advertised 3.8gb. Is this a trick of 3gb proportions!?

3.08 not 3.8.
So 3.1 would basically be a round-up.

ahhh excellent. thanks.
Because I have such a poor connection torrents are always painfully slow for me. I get a good 300kb/sec on direct downloads, but on torrents I tend to get an average of 40kb/s, which meant that it would take about 2 days to download BM.

The direct download is a matter of hours.

Thanks Dr. Karamazov

Here is a direct downloadlink. Full speed!
I got it in 15 mins with a 32 mbit connection.

It’s a german site but the download starts instantly!

Good job and congrats to the BMS team!

I admit: Black Mesa is awesome. To me, this isn’t a mod, it’s an honest-to-God AAA game that just happens to be free. It’s about the size of L4D2 and a damn deal longer than one of the Half-Life 2 episodes and everything about it is custom-made. Far as I’m concerned, you should have charged money for this, because it’s worth a lot.

That said… It’s not exactly like the original. It has a lot more self-referential humour. It was funny when Barney mocked Gordon for plugging in a thing in a thing, but now Freeman seems to have been turned into a useless guy who doesn’t belong on the science team and doesn’t care about his job. A lot of sections also seem to have been cut down. On A Rail is easily half as long, if not a third, and many puzzles have lost their platforming sections. Which is disappointing, since On A Rail was one of my favourite spots, comparable to the Airboat section in Half-Life 2.

That said, quite a few things have been improved, and dramatically. For the first hour or so, I was elbowing a friend of mine going “Look! Look! This used to be just a wall!” So much attention to detail has been paid it’s amazing. Setting the water monsters to die from two tranquilliser darts is also much appreciated. Fighting those things was always more of a pain. That, and not adding clipping to their corpses so they can’t block ladders is pure gold.

Overall, this is a solid product and I heartily endorse it, but it does stray very far away from Half-Life in many, many places.

That was the idea malidictus!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
