Black Mesa is released!

maan,
it’s just like coming home after a long long time.
i cried tears man, this game is beautiful. Nostalgia³.

Thanks for this. You guys rock!

Finished it last night! Overall it’s a very solid mod. I do wish that Gordon’s default jumping had been slightly increased, I know he’s in a suit but a half inch vertical? and that ladders weren’t still occasionally a pain to get off of. The music is badass throughout and some of the voice overs are nicely done and others are on the extreme side. The guards sounding like Batman got tedious. It’s still a challenging fps and it’s cool to revisit it with the alterations. If anyone one wants to check out Half Life, this is the version to play. Even incomplete, it’s still quite the adventure. 7/10

I installed Black Mesa, Installed Source SDK. How to run the game now? Oo

To everyone involved in creating this piece of awesomeness, my heartfelt thanks.

Just installed and I ran the New Game three times just to get into the mood I left behind oh so many years ago. Man, this is simply wonderful. This is a kind of thrill that is indescribable, it must be experienced. Still in Anomalous Materials, don’t want to get into the test chamber. I’ve been roaming all over the place, soaking in the details, talking to almost everyone I see. Ah, the nostalgia!

I’ve despaired of ever getting my hands on this mod, but in the end it’s been worth the wait. Once more, thank you, thank you, thank you… Love you all.

I’m honestly blown away by the sheer detail and dedication to this mod. Half-Life has always been one of my favorite games of all time and I loved the fact that no other game at the time did what it did allowing you have people help you along the way, wondering who was the strange suit guy that kept popping up everywhere known as G-Man, the difficulty of the solders that had some kind of super armor that pissed you off but once you killed them you yelled in celebration and the long and complex Black Mesa that took hours just to get through because you didn’t want a linear path and wanted to explore.

This mod has brought that back to a modern era, with a ton of extras along the way. I really loved the fact you expanded on the complex and made it seem like a real scientific research facility. The extra labs in Sector C and extra offices in the Office Complex really made it seem like a real place one would wanna visit and be Gordon Freeman. Elaborating on that note, I loved the Biodome Labs, I always thought in the original game that the complex was abit too small and that it really needed alot more than what was there.

The outside was just eye candy everywhere, the detail that went into the hydroelectric dam, the roads, the cliffs, the skybox, the desert that Black Mesa is located in, really made me smile and want to no clip everywhere just to see what was over the hills.

The enemies are just ruthless this time around. They’ve really grown in numbers and are pains in the ass to kill, especially the solders, I honestly had to survive on +5 health and just hope there was a medkit around the bin, but the developers where cruel and kept them just out of reach as much as possible, which made you want to fight more and more just to get to the next area.

The atmosphere, very dark, very secluded, you feel you really are all alone in a huge complex with aliens, solders, scientists, guards all having their own agendas either wanting to help you or kill you. The original has nothing on this since most eras in the original were very well lit and you could see everything. Black Mesa makes areas so dark you really don’t know what could pop up at anytime and the electricity sounds next to power boxes and the air conditioning wind noises had an eerie feeling to them.

And then, there’s the human aspect of the AI. The first guard you meet, after getting off the tram, I honestly stayed there about five minutes laughing about what he’d had said about Barney, pressing E just to see what he’d say next. The next guard with the comment about Gordon’s haircut, the scientist in the hall that wanted a vacation, the guard that was making a bet with the scientist in the server room, I mean the list goes on.

But the thing that actually made myself have an emotional bond with these non existent humans is when you, lead a few guards and scientists to the elevator shaft and they had to stay behind, just having one of the guards while you’re climbing the ladder look up at you and say “Don’t forget about us” really almost made you wanna help them and not leave them behind. That is what makes a damn good game, that is Black Mesa.

I truly thank everyone that is involved with this mod, and was involved with this mod, I saw the dedication at the end of the credits, it honestly put a smile on my face, made me want to see all the hidden details I’d missed and made me want to play it over and over again.

Thank you all so much.

Sorry, I was kind of ticked off at my slow dl time and took it out on the forums. As a matter of curiosity, though, what song was it from?

That’s hilarious.

Finally getting the chance to download this… Tons of seeders is making this a 40min download… THANKS!

I’ll seed all night long while i’m playing the hell outta this…

I finished it yesterday and I loved every minute of it, just incredible.

I was expecting this to FEEL like a mod, like I was playing a somewhat disjointed remake of Half Life where scripting maybe wasn’t done right and things just felt off in terms of the world, where I’d just walk room to room to look at the prettier visuals and say “oh I remember this place” but not really feel anything in particular for the game itself, but I was so wrong. You guys put so much effort into this game and I’m honestly blown away. When I’m playing Black Mesa I’m not playing it because it is a shinier Half Life 1, I’m playing it for the experience, for all the little details that was put into this world to make for a great atmosphere. That is something that remakes tend to fuck up, atmosphere, but this did not, it had an incredible atmosphere and this is due to all the work put in to make things look and sound appropriate. Something I really loved in the Lambda Core chapter is every time I was walking between the coolant chambers you’d walk past that large power station and you’d hear the aggressive machinery at work and the entire screen would shake, that is just one example but it’s things like these that improved on the atmosphere a whole lot

Incredible experience and I’m completely stunned you’ve done it without a budget. I can’t wait for the Xen levels

I just finished and have to say:

THAT WAS REALLY AWESOME.

It didn’t really feel like a mod it felt like an own game and like a really great Half-Life remake. Some parts I didn’t really recognize because there was so much detail and some things have been added etc.

I can’t wait for the Xen part to play, when it’s done.

It’s the best SP mod currently available for HL2.

I just registered on this board to say thank you. I checked up on the mod’s development every couple months because I fell in love with the original Half Life’s dark tone and realism. Needless to say, what you all have produced is phenomenal. My gratitude to everyone involved in this project knows no bounds. You have not only recaptured the very essence of half life, but improved on it and stayed true to its core. This is the kind of quality I’d expect from a game studio, and as someone who has dabbled in game development, my appreciation for your hard work and dedication can’t be described. The fact that it is also free and that you guys don’t accept donations is further proof that you are all saints.

From this moment, Black Mesa: Source is the new half life. Next time I hear that somebody has never played half life, I shall point them here.

Yup, it’s just amazing… shame that my pc is old-ish, it stuggles a bit with the loading and torch, otherwise it’s all just fine. It’s near impossible to belive that all that was done by fans… Don’t have words to describe just how great I feel this game is.

I mainly registered to the community just to say my thanks to everyone for making such a fantastic job! The game is amazing nice work everyone!

No problems bro, It’s just an old song from the 80’s. It came to my mind when I started BM, lol, I got kinda giddy… The band is Foreigner.

Feels Like The First Time lyrics
I would climb any mountain
Sail across a stormy sea
If that’s what it takes me baby
To show you how much you mean to me
And I guess it’s just the woman in you
That brings out the man in me
I know I can’t help myself
You’re all in the world to me

It feels like the first time
Feels like the very first time
It Feels like the first time
It Feels like the very first time

I have waited a lifetime
Spent my time so foolishly
But now that I’ve found you
Together we’ll make history

And I know that it must be the woman in you
That brings out the man in me
I know I can’t help myself
You’re all that my eyes can see

And it feels like the first time
Like it never did before

Feels like the first time
Like we’ve opened up the door
Feels like the first time
Like it never will again, never again

Feels like the first time, it feels like the first time
It feels like the very first time, very, very, it feels
It feels like the first time, oh it feels like the first time
It feels like the very first time

Open up the door, won’t you open up the door? Yeah

Feels like the first time
And it feels like the very first time
And it feels like the first time
It feels like the very first time

And it feels like the first time
It feels like the very first time
Oh it feels, it feels like the first time
Yeah it feels like the first time

couldnt you have posted a youtube video instead of lyrics, its a waste of space XD sorry.

Personally, I just wanted to know what it was called so I could look it up on YouTube myself.

WOW, just wow. TBH I always download fan made mods expecting a turd but hoping for better… And Black Mesa source does not disappoint in the slightest.
It’s a beautiful update of a game I’ve always loved (More so than HL2) and the subtle tweaks you included make it even better.
I’m absolutely blown away by it.
Thank you so much for your dedication and dogged determination… And congrats on getting Greenlit… Hoping for TF2 items when this hits steam  Maybe a Barney hat or the obvious headcrab hat ;D

MANY MANY THANKS TO ALL INVOLVED

Hmmm… I think that the Alien Swarm Parasite is too similar… Maybe a Barnacle hat?

Restart Steam entirely. Visit the ‘Installed’ or ‘All Games’ tab, etc. etc. and you should see Black Mesa. Have fun!
