Black Mesa: Fix all the things #2

Some other improvements I have worked on over the past year have been visual additions to a few of our maps, one from the chapter Residue Processing and another from Forget About Freeman. What was interesting about two of the maps is that they were missing detail sprites. I’d noticed over the course of fixing other things the compile log complaining about the detail sprite and detail texture settings not being defined correctly. I’d always passed this off as being intentional but decided to give them a try anyway to see what the results would be.

After a bit of tweaking I was surprised with the improvement it brought to the two areas in question and elected to keep it as is. Perhaps in the future there might be cause to revisit the actual detail sprites they use as im sure other improvements can always be made.

Another improvement has been an implementation of the VOX sounds. these were unfortunately removed by accident from the 2007 release. Right now as it stands it plays in part of the chapter We’ve Got Hostiles but I would like to add bits of it to other chapters where appropriate (places like PU and BP)

In the video I am firing the speaker to play more rapidly to give an impression of the vox, so it wouldn’t play as frequently as that.

Will there be vox announcements in Lambda Core too? I believe there are some in Half-Life

Awesome. The lack of VOX felt wrong to me in BM, glad to hear it’s gonna be in beyond the “military command” line and missile launch

I would assume so, but I’m not 100% certain since its not an area I am involved in.

It’s great that the vox will make a comeback, and hopefully will be extended. I hope we get to hear some direct threats to the player as well. Also in FAF a constant “order to evacuate” would really emphasize the military rereat.

Now I finally know what I thought those chapters were lacking. My first impression of playing BM was that the outdoor areas do not look as pretty as indoors. More vegetation is definitely an improvement.

Lol, I’ve been playing with VOX since like my second playthrough. All you have to do is copy over the original files from HL1. Sounds better too.

Lower quality (well rather frequency). Else I’d be happy to use them.

That’s an easter egg in the Hazard Course

It was used in other areas too. Most vividly I recall it from the locked door in Lambda complex right before you get to the shotgun scientist.

Also, don’t count on it returning to HC.
