It’s because Bioshock was a “dumbed down for the consol tards” version of System Shock 2 to many people on the forums.
Because someone started a thread about Bioshock and people are voicing their opinions? Oddly, no one had been talking about its strengths until this thread either.
I loved the first one and from the looks of it I’ll like the second one too. And I NEVER play multiplayer so it doesn’t matter in the least if a game has it or not. I am a bit wary of Bioshock 3, too many publishers immediately set out to do a trilogy without even checking if there is enough material to warrant a third game. I think that Bioshock 1 had plenty of story in it to flesh out in a sequel, but a third game? Either it will no longer be set in Rapture (in which case it will be Bioshock in name only) or it will be more of the same as the previous two.
I think Bioshock 3 could be more than just “Bioshock in name only” even if it doesn’t completely take place in Rapture. Oh sure, it has to relate to the previous games somehow, but I think there’s potential in moving the story further out of Rapture.
It is clear from the subject matter of Bioshock 2 that the developers will have no issues finding new material. It was clearly not thought of when they made the first one.
I totally agree.
Hunting for the Big Daddy parts was tedious, as were many other bits towards the end of the game.
I think the point of decline was after the section in that mad musicians room(when you fight the splicers to classical music, epic)
Bah, the gameplay was boring and repetitive, I didn’t give a fuck about the characters, graphical style was awesome, but again repetitive, and the awesome storyline was just utter rubbish. I can barely even remember it, it was so bad, but I do remember finishing the game and going “wtf, why did I even bother”.
I don’t know about in this case, because I never played system Shock, but a lot games (for pc and console) recently have been a lot simpler and easier, and it is true that consoles appeal to a more mainstream audience of gamers who dislike complicated stats and interfaces. This does happen, but as to whether it is because of console ports or just because is arguable, but I am definitely of the former opinion. Also games often suffer from being developed cross-platform. There is nothing worse than a console UI on a pc, or vice versa.
EDIT: Shit double post, could a mod plox merge + delete this text?
What’s wrong with a “simple” control scheme? I prefer to play games with controls that can be easily mapped out on a controller, even on the PC. Hell, I bought a gaming specific keyboard out of fear of constantly loosing track of what each key does.
Call me a dumbass, but if you do then you’re an asshole.
It’s probably just bad porting (ie GTAIV to PC and Dragon Age to XBox 360.) It happens all the time, even from console to console.
Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is with complicated stats. I mean, if it’s like an RPG like Fallout or STALKER, then I understand, but so what if every game doesn’t have it? Half-Life’s basic gameplay boils down to shoot that, turn valve/solve physics puzzle, then shoot at something else, and look at how well that worked out?
shrug I suppose, but most everyone I had ever talked to thought Bioshock was fucking awesome. I guess there’s just a unusual concentration of Bioshock haters here.
Edit:
@Johnkiller: I also have no issues with the UI. Works fine and allows me to easily do what I want to do without straining myself. (On PC)
Or an unusual concentration of Bioshock lovers on your end.
Touché.
i know what bioshock 3 will be about, itll be a prequal set in the late fifties… (I know nothing at all about bioshock 2, so if thats what that games about i aplogise)
Actuall, I won’t, because I actually agree with you. But you have to agree, games are geting more mainstream, and, as a result, getting simpler/easier, and while this is sometimes ok, in the specific example you posted (RPGs) IT IS NOT OK. e.g TES series Daggerfall-awesome character creation-> Morrowind-still good, but simpler->Oblivion-still an aewsome game, but EASY AS HELL, ffs you could random your stats and pwn everything.
Note that the later two were developed cross-platform, and indeed (not so much in Morrowind) suffered from clunky console controls on PC without mods.
Well, I haven’t played a TES game yet (though I did play Fallout 3 and loved it), so maybe I don’t know how bad it is, but it just might be due to developer’s different take on mouse sensitivity/button placement. As for the difficulty, well, either turn it up if it’s an option (and if you say “I’m playing it on Hard and it’s too easy!”, I’m sorry to tell you this, but you have no life), or download mods to increase it.
Anyway, like you said, the games are still awesome. As long as the games are awesome, that’s all I care about.
I don’t mind an accessible control scheme on the PC, as long as it’s not a dumbed down version because of a console port. I am however wary that many developers/publishers are going multi platform with their games yet only develop for one of these platforms and then port the game over to the others.
Just look at the Elder Scrolls series, I love the fact that they’ve improved on the combat system in Oblivion (compared to the same animation from Morrowind) and the fact that you can use magic and weapons at the same time. But on the other hand I have to admit that they’ve nerfed some aspects of the game compared to Morrowind. Same for Fallout 3. I’m really worried that the next Elder Scrolls game will be a crappy casual-oriented game, most likely a dumb MMO.
But so far, I don’t think BioShock has succumbed to this trend.
one thing i really don’t like about Bethesda’s last few games is that even without cheats, you can still max out every singles one of your stats. thats why i prefer a skill tree system, where once you go down a certain path, other options are already closed off. The game gets really boring when your invincible to every type of enemy and amazing with every weapon.
^YES^
Eh, I don’t really care. You really have to work hard and be REALLY obsessed to max out your stats.
Me? I just play it for the experience, like I do with all games.
Bioshock is a game with awesome atmoshere, superb voice actors, average (maybe even shitty for 2007) graphics, too many “where the fuck I’m supposed to go/what to do”-moments and unique guns compared to your everyday FPS-game. I hope they fix at least some of the flaws in # 1 and make the final battle more epic than in # 1 (it was pretty weak if you ask me) and the ending video was pretty random. I’d give Bioshock personally 7,5/10. If Bioshock 2 comes anyday soon, I’ll either Warez it or buy from Steam when there’s a sale.
