Well as far as I’m aware, in some of the first portalling experiments, a cat was used, and one part of it remained, whilst another came out on the other side. So Barney’s haunted by that.
At least, that’s what I think.

I think it is safe to understand that a cat was killed while testing a teleporter in the past.

In the leaked beta beta, I think there were audio files saying that the cat got turned inside out.
He might have mistook the sounds of the Shield Scanners for a cat.
laidlaw was a furry - the cat is clearly Gordan, G-man is the dog, and the beer barney owes Gordan is cat milk. Barney hears cats meowing at random times because he’s autistic.

They gave alyx the water that makes you forget that’s why there’s a can in Kliener’s lab and that’s why she wanted to hear about it.
According to OverWiki, he had to turn the cat inside out to make sure it was a cat, and he mistakes a Strider howl not the scanners.
