Barney Calhoun?

Blue Shift is at least considered partly canon, I read somewhere that the teleportation works like Dr. Rosenberg explained it did (not that anyone was listening.) On the other hand, Rosenberg and Co. will almost certainly not return in any sequels to come.

Barney won’t have a big role in Black Mesa because 1: You can kill almost all the security guards in the game and 2: Which one is the real Barney. The mod takes the safe route of assuming that Blue Shift is canon, and have him be the guy pounding on the door at the start of the game.

“About that beer i owed ya” is a reference to “Hey, catch me later; I’ll buy you a beer,” a line spoken by security guards if you try to “use” them pre-cascade. If you are extremely nitpicky, Gordon was probably promised a beer before the beginning of Half-Life, for whatever reason.

“Just like old times, eh Gordon?” did not necessarily mean that he and Gordon fought alongside each other. I believe that he was simply referring to all the legendary ass-kicking Gordon did back in Black Mesa, and the shootouts with Combine soldiers reminds him of those he had with HECU soldiers back in the day, and that he knows Gordon had too.

You know, you could’ve just asked me…

I was the guard at the beginning with the flashlight (torch to some). Gordon and I were friends before he jacked it all up. Hell, he should owe ME the beer after messing things up that bad.

Anywho, I only saw him once after he arrived on the tram that morning. That was when he was being pulled away by those military grunts. I never thought I’d see him again.

As for the questions regarding the crowbar… Do you really think Kleiner, Eli, Gordon, and I were the only survivors? There were other scientists and guards who survived. They told stories of Gordon killing dozens of headcrabs and zombies with the crowbar. I only saw it fitting to put back into his hands what he had used to fight the aliens.

I hope this helps.

@ Scorpion42: If it is partly canon, what has been confirmed by Valve then? Did Valve confirm that Barney actually was the first security guard you see in Half Life?
In general I agree with you Scorpion, especially the last part what you mentioned about “Just like old times, eh Gordon?”

Well it’s hard to say what’s canon and what is not except you’ve got a statement from Valve on a particular scene / character etc.
If you have played Svencoop, you know that every allied security Guard is named “Barney”, except the corpulent ones are named “Otis”.
I do not know if Valve confirmed anything from BlueShift, so correct me if I am wrong.
From my point of view, Valve did not really think about who the real barney is, since people keep discussing and referring to that “I owe you a beer” thing. So they just left that up to the players.
Now as a great team of independent modders is recreating the game “Half Life” that surely is a question to be answered, who the real barney is (we don’t want every guard look the same).
But I am happy with the solution they found: That you see him ONCE in the beginning and never again.

How were we supposed to ask you if you only registered today?

I would assume Barney is kind of the head of his particular sector. Inbound in HL-1 mentions contacting the Civillian Recruitment Division for (among other positions) low-level security. Assuming low-level means 1, that would mean that there is a ranking system; new recruits have access to low-level storage areas and some closets and stuff, while naturally the more experienced officers would have access to more areas within their particular sector. However, Anomalous Materials has some pretty important stuff in it. Not like the Lambda Core, but they were doing some pretty big experiments in teleportation down there. So yes, I would think that the importance of the items in an area is directly correlated to the level of security one must have before possessing access to a significant amount of rooms.

Damn you and your logic…

Hey, Barney. Did you heard a cat?

So, what then about the vent shaft competitions alluded to by Alyx in HL2 Ep1?

We are all heard of a cat.

haven’t read about this yet, so I’d like to know: is barney’s head from Half Life 2 used or will he look different?

Either way it won’t matter because you’ll only be able to see his back. But I assume that they use his Half-Life 2 face.

:0

:expressionless:

:awesome:

:hmph:

hm that is right indeed, but I am one kind of a guy who (after I finished the game) uses noclip to explore unreachable areas and it’d be awesome to see the real barney

It would be cool to at least try to get an approximation of Barney’s face using their face maker system.

They should edit in the F#@k you voice clip from barney in HL2, as the train drives by.

Isn’t Barney the guy that opens the door for you, just after you got off the train (in hl1). He’s talking about “catch me later I’ll buy you a beer”. When I played HL2 Barney’s first line is “about that beer I own you”, which makes sense since he’s the only guy in HL1 that wanted to buy you a beer, but you never saw him again until the first part of HL2.

These 2 lines always confirmed for me who the ‘real’ barney was in hl1. But maybe I’m wrong and there are other guards offering you beer =P
