Barney Calhoun?

Forgive me for this… but…

I’ve just read in the wiki that Barney’s only appearance will be in the first chapter, Inbound, when you see him pounding on the door with his torch…

Now… I hate to say this, but that makes no sense.

Now, I suppose it’s more than possible that they could simply know each other from before the events of the first game, but the way Barney talks when you meet him in HL2, it sounds as though Gordon and Barney did work together during the events of the resonance cascade crisis.

My suggestion therefore, is to have some small part of the game where you have to work together with Barney, for continuity’s sake.

(although I’ve got sneaky suspicions that you’ve allready done so and simply aren’t going to say so.)

Anyways, besides that, I’ve been lurking around, following this mod for over a year now. I am truelly amazed by what I see, and I am thoroughly looking forward to playing this when it is released despite what I’ve mentioned above.

I know you guys/girls are working really hard on this, and I am nothing, if not an admirer of hard work, knowing full well I’d never be able to do something like this myself.

Keep up the good work, and don’t let people badger you about release dates!

All those things happened before the BMI, as it was not gordon’s first day.

There, oh and before you ask, WHEN IT’S DONE!

I did not ask about the release date. I think if you had read what I said in it’s entirety you would have noticed I had no intention to do so, specifically, my last sentence about not letting people badger about release dates.

In any case, I’ve no more to say about my suggestion, except to request that people that might respond to my suggestion, please read what I have posted in it’s entirety.

That ‘working together’ thing doesn’t work quite as well as you think, considering that after the player gets the crowbar, you have to assume he’s a homicidal maniac and kills every non-essential NPC in the game.

Plus, I can’t recall any HL2/Ep1 lines from Barney where he made that implication. Could you quote something you were referring to?

Since Barney was the generic security guard in HL1, he could be anywhere so it was decided to follow Blueshift’s point of view : Gordon and Barney only met once on that particular day.

I think it was a flashlight.

:hmph:

[EDIT] Fucking html, how does it work?

Just type the link you sillies.

He might be talking about “Just like old times 'eh Gordon?” which somewhat implies that they’ve fought together before.

Alyx Vance: “I’ve heard stories about you and airducts. Doctor Kleiner says whenever he locked himself out of his office you and Barney used to compete to see who could get in fastest without using a key.”

I agree with you: “About that beer I owe you” in HL2 is a direct reference to “Hey, catch me later I’ll buy you a beer” from HL1.

To me, in HL1, Barney was the security guard that I kept running into throughout the game. I recognised his face and voice, so it had to be the same person. I didn’t really care that it’s impossible since I once saw him die and he was in locations that he simply could not have gotten to before me. But anyway, I would never have thought that you actually only see Barney for a second in the beginning of the game.

But as the game gets more realistic and focuses on not repeating the same faces over and over, the problem arises and you have to decide, realistically, which one Barney really is. So because of Blue Shift, you KNOW that Barney is the guy at the door with the flashlight. And also because of Blue Shift, you know that you never meet Gordon after that, so that explains everything. The Half-Life universe has ONE reality from different perspective. That one reality has to remain unchanged in Black Mesa as well!

There’s several faster ways to get into an office without a key

Yup but Alyx doesn’t need to know about that.

fast way number 1: break the door with the crowbar :awesome:

You would think that Barney, being a Level 3 Security Officer, would have a master-key to all rooms in the Anomalous Materials Laboratories. Or maybe you need to be Level 4 for that?

He has to be a Moderator or Dev - Wait a minute, we’re not talking about the Froums, are we?

Only if you want to get fired! > :frowning:

Fast way version 1.1: Break door with crowbar, then break the boss’s face.

Secondary note: Hide body, clean bloodstains. Act casual.

Tertiary note: Don't forget to take what you wanted from
the office in the first place.
