Did I stutter? Everything in the HL games is used to enhance game play – including the physics system, which is often ignorantly accused of being “gimmicky,” even though it’s just the opposite. It would be gimmicky if there weren’t a legitimate use for it outside the “Ooh and Ahh” factor.
The kind of combat shown here is a gimmick. It’s like the dog attacks (or a million other things) in the COD games. It doesn’t add to gameplay; in fact, it actually sucks you out of it and puts you in a pre-existing animated encounter that you have to beat before your character can slowly stand back up and continue fighting. You’re basically changing the rules on the character in the midst of combat because it’s “cool.” Which is fine, sometimes cool for the sake of cool is OK. But it doesn’t mesh with Valve’s design philosophy, especially when it comes to HL games. Infinity Ward has literally made billions off it though, so there’s something to be said for it.
Again, I’m not dumping on the animation itself, I just don’t see what it would add to the game besides being an extra feature to put on the back of the box.
