It was a glorified tech demo. The story was a mix of Pocahontas and The Matrix, with the art style stolen from Aliens.

Okay, calm down dear, it’s only a special effect. :meh:

Technically speaking, digital replacement of body parts isn’t any more bleeding edge or tricky than any other sort of CGI. I agree that its always a pleasant suprise when it’s done well, but let’s not go off the deep end here.

I would also take issue with your assertion that “CG[I] that is used for explosions, space ships, aliens […] stands out more”. This is a somewhat fatuous statement; unless it’s badly done, the CGI elements shouldn’t stand out as being fake, irregardless of the subject matter. Whether or not we believe in the reality of the presented subject matter, we shouldn’t notice that they’re effects. Full stop.

I stopped listening to you when you wrote that. :rage:

Registered for this? what? I’ve been here since '07 dude.

I think we just disagree on what makes a movie good; even if I DID agree that the special effects were great, I still don’t think any amount of pizzazz should ever excuse a poor plot. they should have just made a 20 minute tech demo if that’s all this was meant to be and saved 500 million dollars that could have been put towards something brilliant.

edit: actually '06 I think… hmmm… time flies.

Wow, I started a thread that has grown to over 11 pages. I feel so accomplished with myself. Maybe I should go write a book next…

forgive me for blatantly Necroposting, but Avatar FUCKING ROCKS!

Aside from the fact that the villains were cartoonishly one dimensionally evil and that the Nav’i characters and the current state of Earth and why “unobtanium” is needed (and how it got such a ridiculous name) needed a bit more backstory, the movie was fantastic.

unobtainium is an existing term used in ‘everyday’ scientific speech (aka it isn’t written down in textbooks or anything) but it used to describe a rare material that is needed for purposes like the one it serves in the movie.

But what exactly it does is never really explained. They just say it’s worth a ton of money on Earth.

i think the guy said its used as a power source. you know, for all their science. :ninja:

unobtainium is an “super conductor” which can transmit electricity (like copper wire) but with zero resistance (imagine a torch made with unobtainium, 1 AA battery will last a life time  )

btw, i love it too! epic movie.

I watched it in 3D, at my local earlier this week.

I really, really enjoyed it.

That is all.
.

oops, i forgot to mention, i saw it here: https://www.imax.com.au/home/

Worst CGI I’ve ever seen in a movie… Nearly all the characters were blue and out proportion, wtf?

Realism my ass.

Haha that was good.

Read this.

So all of Avatar’s plot is stolen and not at all original. Thanks for the info. That’s interesting to know.
