I am pretty sure such things did exist at some point… though I cannot tell when exactly.
As for luminescent plants, I cannot provide any info - but mushrooms work
Seriously - how can you look at the wonders of our homeworld and not find it awesome? At least watch a little discovery channel before you judge Mother Earth so roughly. She deserves better than this. It’s not her fault that she’s been constantly raped by humankind since the dawn of industrialization.
Anyway, no. THey don’t make a movie, but they make MANY MORE.
Don’t you get it? This is a movie that HAD to be made. The one plotless CGfest that was SO beautiful it blew people away reguardless of the mindless cliches.
It was a necessarry step in the evolution of filmmaking. This is not a fucking opinion. This is a fact. No amout of “yeah, but…” will change that. Just wait. The next movie that Weta’s attatched to will be JUST as breathtaking, and because they’ve had practice, will be APPLIED to something.
This was the film equivalent of a tech demo. I expected that, and looked forward to it. Others…idk what the hell was goind through your mind when you expected a deep plot? And if you DIDN’T ecxpect one, and wanted one, why did you see it?
I watched GIJoe in theatres for some mindless action, and comedically bad acting.
I got that.
I watched District 9 to see a young director’s first movie. I wanted to see what someone who’d only done commercials and short films could do.
I got that.
I watched Avater because I’m a Cameron fan, and I wanted to see the next step in visual effects.
I FUCKING got that.
Word to the wise: When you go se a movie, know what to expect. If you expect something bad and get something bad, DON’T FUCKING BITCH.
Avater’s lack of depth in plot was common knowledge since day one. It was ALSO not the point of the movie. This ALSO should’ve been common knowledge.
haven’t we already had plenty of plotless CG-fests? StarWars prequels, Transformers (both of them), to name but five?
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but Gary Sinise isn’t paraplegic, and yet his legs were quite definitely missing in Forrest Gump… making able bodied actors appear less than able bodied isn’t exactly bleeding edge you know.
Actually, xalenar has a point. In those movies where able bodied actors are shown as less than able bodied (Forrest Gump, Wild Wild West), the actors’ legs are simply blue-screened out of existence, or hidden with camera tricks. In Avatar, his legs still existed, he interacted with them, and they were visibly wasted away. And yet I never thought at any one point, ‘hey, those aren’t the actor’s real legs!’
I rather watch Pocahontas than a movie that cost 500 million dollars to make because of it’s technology it used being made specifically for THAT movie and not only that, but other movies will be able to benefit from the technology made for that movie and possibly look even more stunning than Avatar. But yeah… Pocahontas > Avatar

Who cares if the story was Generic? That’s like, Looking at a amazingly beautiful women and going “I wouldn’t even touch that because of her skin being a tad bit lighter than my preferred shade of skin color.”
Honestly I’d rather put up with a improved Generic story than some shitty, stupid story like Twilight or Legion.
