Any idea why my workstation is only using half of it’s available RAM? It’s an i7 system with Windows 7 “Home Premium” 64 bit.
One of your sticks crashed so windows rebooted using only one.
If you have 4 sticks it’s using 2, anyway just switch the ram sticks around and it should work again.
Fuck, really? I just bought this POS so it’s still under warrantee, but I really don’t want to return it.
sersoft is right. That happens when Windows recognizes how much mem you have but some of it isnt working properly. best bet is to return it.
Actually this is apparently a common problem with my mobo, I don’t think its bad RAM. Looks like I have to remove my CPU and put it back in the socket correctly. God damn it, I bought the fucker from Dell so I wouldn’t have to do this kind of crap.
It’s either a bent pin in the CPU socket or Memory Remapping Option in the BIOS is disabled. I wonder how to check out the BIOS? Better exhaust all options before opening the case.
I suggest calling dell and telling them to give your money back, then build your own PC, a core i7 920 can be overclocked to almost 4ghz, but a dell mobo and the cheapest possible ram they could find will never give you a chance to do that.
If you’re having problems like this while it’s still brand new, imagine when it starts showing it’s age. :fffuuu:
If it’s in fact a bent pin and I can take out the CPU, unbend the pin, put the CPU back in, and be able to use all 8GB of RAM… why in the Christ would I want to scrap it and build a new computer?
Go ahead, I would take it apart too.
 why the Christ did I think asking for tech advice on this forum would be a good idea
The pins are on your MoBo, not on the CPU, they are VERY easy to break, if you want to do it anyway, proceed with extreme caution.
Your biggest problem? You bought from Dell. They have a habit of fucking things up. I’ve replaced more mobos and hardware from dells than any other brand.
apparently this is true. although if you research any manufacturer on the web, you’ll always find reports from people saying their gear was not built properly. Well, thank Jesus Christ for warranties and having friends who work in IT. I’ll sort this out within a couple days, for now I’m working fine with 4gb instead of 8 so it’s not all bad.

Why the fuckk would you buy an OEM PC?
No offence, but OEM PCs are for those with extra money lying around and/or do not want the best bang for their buck. Just build a machine 2x as powerful for 4x less money.
EDIT: I did not see the /thread. Pardon me.
Jesus, you guys need to make up your minds… am I too klutzy to unbend a mobo pin without breaking it, or am I tech-savvy enough to build a PC from scratch?
But seriously, nah bro, I researched building my own PC before buying this one, I would have saved $200 at the most, which is peanuts when we’re talking about a $1500 system, not to mention the time I saved not building it.
But you would have gotten much higher quality parts from name brands. Plus its sooo fun using a PC you know you put your time into.
I dont
Dells break all the time…
Not verybody knows how to build a PC.
but you can get someone else to build it for you and it would still be cheaper than an OEM PC.
true, but my parents wouldn’t let me do that, they would say that they are only 15, how do they know what they are doing it is a waste of your moneys.
