Atomic PC - BM Preview

aka. The Press are dicks?

They took the screens down didn’t they? :meh:

They put online something that was not supposed to be there… yet. So yeah, I’d call that a leak any day.

Being an amateur photographer (amongst other things) all I can say is: “Trust me, I know the feeling!”

Google is your friend.

i prefer to label it the way Atomic labeled it ‘a misunderstanding’ no particular party is at fault here

look, it’s a two-way sword. You’re a game developer, you want free publicity and to build hype around your product, so you release a build in order to get press coverage. At that point, if the ground rules aren’t clearly defined, it’s totally out of your hands how the press approaches the story you gave them. This expectation that the gaming press needs to function as nothing more than an advertisement and show exactly what the people they are covering want them to show is totally opposite to the definition of things like “journalism” and “reporting.”

edit - on the contrary, both parties are at fault. the BM team for not clearly defining ground rules, Atomic PC for self-censoring in a (probably futile) attempt to ensure privileged access in the future.

A team member decided upon himself to allow the press to take unlimited amounts of screen-shots without consulting the team. I would call that a leak.

:pirate:

“I told you guys you could take as many screenshots as you needed, but god damn!”

I wouldn’t. A “leak” is commonly defined as unauthorized release of proprietary information. If you give something to the press, it’s then considered public domain and not proprietary, with respect to the ground rules that you establish as a condition for access. And you’re even saying the media had permission from a team member to publish the shots, so how is that a “leak” in any possible sense of the word? The build review was authorized I’m assuming by the whole team, the screenshots were authorized by the team member you all delegated to deal with the press. You didn’t like what the screenshots showed, you got them taken down, fair enough -but that’s not a “leak.”

I’m actually very happy he did. I know the mod’s alive, coming along well, and could actually see this while the screens were still up. This has done more to reinvigorate a strong appreciation and eagerness for the release of the mod for me.

We DID NOT give permission to allow Atomic to play the build.
The team member acted on his own without consulting anyone about what he was doing.

We did not know of the event until after it was posted.

Hence he leaked information to the media without consulting the team.

As it was said somewhere in this thread, I saw the hands and thought they looked a bit wonky. I didn’t look at the rest because I dun wantz spoilars.

As far as I know, now I’ve got an idea of how many things I’ll have to recolor once the mod is released…

Wait, this whole article was unauthorized?

correct

oh noes

holy shit haha, okay I was definitely wrong about it not being a leak then. So on a scale from 1-10, how pissed are you guys at ol’ James M? Did he disgrace the name of James everywhere?

I hope your not to hard on the guy, I know it was definitively not right. However as someone who has been wanting a sense of confirmation that the mod was mostly finished but on the finishing touches is nice. I’m fairly certain that the reason for no updates on mod status was that you don’t want people speculation with a leak you can say “It was a leak we don’t talk about that here”

ohhhh i didn’t realize even the build was unauthorized, thought it was just the pictures, well that changed alot, a leak it is

same here, thats crazy - the whole article only happened because they got unauthorized access

shit man I agree, this is basically a gift to fanboys. it’s not going to convince anyone who thinks BM is vaporware that isn’t, and it’s not going to convince those of us who are waiting for it to drop that it isn’t coming soon. Made my day, to be honest.

Oh wow, that REALLY sucks. Having your work leaked is such a shitty thing, especially with these guys wanting to keep everything as a surprise. I found the article and the leaked images, but I didn’t look at them. I don’t want anything spoiled. :[

When valve was hyping EP2 and saying “HAY GUIZE NOW YOU’LL KNOW EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN EP2 BEFORE YOU PLAY LOL,” I didn’t read or watch any of it. I like to play games and be surprised.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
