The lack of AA, AS filtering, and general texture quality really makes me sad that they even CONSIDERED putting these screenshots up.
Nice way to fuck up everyone’s opinion of the mod- lots of people are like, “hurr the pictures on the site look better,” as if they have no concept of the fact that the people taking the screenshots were retards with an ancient computer.
I only looked through the first 1/3 of the pics. Don’t want to spoil myself completely. Regardless of their ancient computer (and lack of common sense), it still looks freaken awesome.
lol’d at retextured HL2 rocks. HEV texture looks better than in the official release, but still cheap orange plastic. Scientist randomisation is cool. Tram ride looks like it’ll actually be fun this time round.
these screeenshots really made my day. i don’t know why, since i always believed you would release one day. but actually seeing some few samples of the great work you’ve done shows that this believe was justified.
i’m sure the team is somehow pissed, but don’t get worked up too much. it had to happen. your policy of holding back as much as possible raised expectations and pressure which had to end somehow like this.
How exactly can you spoil this mod at all? It’s pretty much a modern version of a pre-existing game. The only thing you might spoil is easter eggs and new puzzles or something.
Screenshots look awesome, for me anyways. If I don’t get a new computer BM:S will look a lot worse anyway, but still better than the original HL, though with DiamondD’s pack Half-Life doesn’t look that terrible.
I just hope my assessment of the release date is correct. I probably would have enjoyed the beginning of Black Mesa if I hadn’t seen them, but since I’ve seen the screenshots I have gained new hope in it coming out this year.
I hope not, because I want to see this mod updated to the Portal 2 Engine before the release (of course if Valve releases it in the first half of 2011…)
I’ve honestly never seen the ability to sort by date-added. I just tried google and bing, and no luck, even in google’s advanced. (this was not to do with the screen shots, that statement just caught me off guard)
And get a mod rushed and not totally polished? No way, good sir! Did you see the latest videos of Portal2 playthrough? The shadows, particle effects, fogs and some of other features of the engine are awesome! BM could gain a lot if ported, and be on par with the most recent graphical standards of the source games available. BM is great in the way it is now (the team is making an amazing job even with an old engine), but it could be even better.
Hello, long time lurker and first time posting here!
About the leaked screenshots, I wanted to post my honest thoughts on them as I have been around this place ever since you guys first started this mod!
So to start off, I did see all the leaks ever made including the recent one and I have all of them saved for archive purposes.
After seeing the recent leak I decided to compare the screens that I could, with some of the official ones. To my surprise, in most of the cases the official ones seemed to have better lighting, while the leaked ones seemed to have some areas more detailed (like the round desk at the beginning) but suffer from lack of shadows, bump maps and show a form of excessive ambient lighting.
I tried to find the logical answer for the difference between official and leaked screenshots in graphical details and I couldn’t find anything other than the possibility that the leaked screens have been taken from an older build or taken on medium settings.
It would be very nice if some of the devs would be able to give an answer to those questions, now that the leak has happened. Some further details on the leaked screens would just clear some of the rumors going on and fix some of the damage already done.
I also wanted to suggest an idea which might be good for the devs and BM’s public image.
From what I read in this topic, I understand some of you devs are pissed off and some of you might even be a bit disoriented after this leak. If I was part of your team, I would suggest that everybody inside would look at the leaked screenshots and see if you have any areas from those leaks that are fully completed and polished!
If you do, then maybe it’s a good idea to post new screenshots of those areas taken by you in a proper way, so that people can see how those areas look when they are fully polished are run on highest settings.
If you do not do this, I fear that it will be a wasted opportunity to fix some of the damage done by Atomic PC!
I will not lie to you, after seeing everything, I do feel a bit disappointed about SOME of the screens as they are IMO showing low res textures, too much ambient lighting, almost no chrome, or bump maps and a big lack of shadows.
To give an example, I find the Inbound tram looking very detailed as a model and design while at the same time I find it’s metal chase texture, looking nothing like metal but more like gray textured paper.
In fact some other textures in those screens seem to look like textured paper because they lack bump maps.
My first thought was that some of the 3d models or walls are covered in textured paper that mimics their materials instead of looking like they are really made out of concrete or metal or what ever the case is for each object. Some of the walls and objects give the sensation that you get when you look at a real wall covered in a poster that has bricks printed on it.
Here’s my brief view on a random screenshot to be more objective.
When I look at the leaked screenshot 73 I see a very well done map with lots of details but I also see too much ambient lighting and no variation in light sources and I definitely see a need for more shadows or at least(though I am not sure it works in the source engine) some ambient occlusion to give the curves of the walls more depth.
I like very much what I’ve seen and I really feel like I am seeing half life 1 being remade, so big congrats to everybody but I also see a few graphical shortcomings in some of the screens which I wish would get fixed.
I hope you agree with my critics and if you don’t it’s the same to me as I will still play this when It comes out with lots of interest.
It would be nice if you would consider my suggestion and take some new screenshots of the already leaked screens in order to fix some of the damage done by ATOMIC. It might not be clear here, but I did see lots of people on other forums talking about the leaked screens and it seems lots have them and also quite a number of them are putting down our work based on this leak with no mercy.
The guy that did this to you deserves to be thrown out of your team for being either incredibly stupid or an incredible bastard!
Ps. I hope you take my critics from an artist’s perspective instead of a whining kid, as I have also done something across the lines of what you guys are doing here with this mod.
For who cares to know I was part of the Classic Doom3 Mod that did have more than a decent reception back when it got out![/SIZE]
I guess the devs always appreciate some constructive oppinions about the mod, but specially in this case of the leaked pictures, let me quote a dev response straight from the BM ModDB page:
So… Don’t worry man! A lot will be improved until the release.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
