Ha ha Daniel =) but yes you are most likely correct there too. Such things are impossible to prove and therefore like many other things only as true as one thinks they are. I shall be the wise and go play my games now, which means sleep. Good evening gentlemen.
Speaking on the subject of missing flights…I missed a flight once. My own stupidity, actually. I was flying to Toronto from Seattle and had a 45 minute layover in Vancouver. I had never traveled internationally before. It was only after landing in Vancouver to head for my next gate that I realized…I had to leave the secure area, go through the border (customs, passport, etc), end up back out by the ticketing area, then have to go back through security. I missed my flight by about 15 minutes. Should’ve had a longer layover. But they got me on the next flight out.
The flight I was supposed to get on? It landed safely and on time.
What does that mean, I wonder? What was the reason it didn’t have any problems?
Peter Dublin Hey
Areck Degeneffe Hello
Peter Dublin Do you have the answers?
Areck Degeneffe The answer is 42
Peter Dublin Of course it is
Peter Dublin But where will I go after I die?
Areck Degeneffe Wherever they move your body to
Areck Degeneffe As far as “you” as in your conciousness
Areck Degeneffe You simply go back to the state you were in before you were born
Areck Degeneffe Surely you remember that
Peter Dublin How can you be certain?
Peter Dublin I mean that makes sense
Peter Dublin but
Peter Dublin how can anyone really know?
Areck Degeneffe How can one be certain that there isn’t a fairy princess unicorn revolving around the earth?
Areck Degeneffe You honestly can’t know
Peter Dublin Or a flying spaghetti monster?
Areck Degeneffe But one conclusion is infinitely more logical than the other
Areck Degeneffe Absence of the ability to disprove the existence of gods etc
Areck Degeneffe Isn’t the same as disproving the absence of gods
Peter Dublin so it is uncertain
Peter Dublin which was my original point
Peter Dublin It is equally possible that there is or is not a god, but we can’t tell.
Areck Degeneffe Just like most things in life, but still makes one conclusion more logical than the other.
Areck Degeneffe There are many things that cannot be disproved, but that doesn’t make them all true does it
Areck Degeneffe Neither does it make the chances that it is true or not 50/50
Peter Dublin It depends on who you ask
Peter Dublin some people will say that there is evidence
Peter Dublin for god
Areck Degeneffe Even if it was 50/50 that there is a god
Areck Degeneffe Which god is that 50/50 for?
Peter Dublin good point
Peter Dublin I guess it would have to be for at least one god
Peter Dublin and then maybe it splits further
Areck Degeneffe So you’re basically talking about pascal’s wager
Areck Degeneffe Why not believe in god, you have nothing to lose right?
Peter Dublin well not really
Peter Dublin I never bought it
Peter Dublin It’s just as possible that there
Peter Dublin is a god who sends Athiests to heaven
Peter Dublin and Theists to Hell
Areck Degeneffe Or even that god isn’t a conciousness at all
Peter Dublin I’m just saying that people say there is evidence
Areck Degeneffe But rather
Areck Degeneffe God is just the rules of our universe
Peter Dublin ok
Areck Degeneffe The things responsible for creating the universe in its entirety
Peter Dublin Trippy
Areck Degeneffe I guess it depends on how broadly you would define the word god
Peter Dublin right
Areck Degeneffe But why even name it god then
Areck Degeneffe What makes a god necessary?
Peter Dublin right I see where you’re going
Peter Dublin I feel like people need a source of meaning
Peter Dublin Because without god
Peter Dublin Everything is meaningless
Areck Degeneffe Is it?
Peter Dublin Well there is no bigger plan then
Areck Degeneffe You are part of a bigger plan
Areck Degeneffe The atoms
Areck Degeneffe That made up your body
Peter Dublin Everything we do is distroyed
Areck Degeneffe Were at one point
Areck Degeneffe A star
Areck Degeneffe You know that right?
Peter Dublin right
Peter Dublin but I am not those atoms
Areck Degeneffe You are part of this universe
Peter Dublin I am something nonphysical
Peter Dublin I enhabit some atoms
Areck Degeneffe You are saying I as in some kind of soul or spirit then?
Peter Dublin yes
Peter Dublin how then can we say that we have value
Peter Dublin if we do not admit that it is because we are souls
Areck Degeneffe How could we admit to having souls
Areck Degeneffe Which nobody can be sure if we have or not
Peter Dublin I think it’s obvious, but that’s just me
Areck Degeneffe Obviously it’s not obvious
Peter Dublin I mean, otherwise
Areck Degeneffe Otherwise, everyone would share your opinion
Peter Dublin every other animal has just as much value
Areck Degeneffe Do they not?
Peter Dublin no
Peter Dublin People at large believe that animal life is less sacred
Peter Dublin than Human life
Areck Degeneffe Just because you can’t understand someone speaking a different language
Areck Degeneffe Does that inability to communicate make them less of a person
Peter Dublin no
Areck Degeneffe What makes a person more special in the scheme of things
Areck Degeneffe Ever read cracked? lol
Areck Degeneffe It’s a site with some funny articles.
Areck Degeneffe I think you might find this one interesting
Areck Degeneffe https://www.cracked.com/article_18930_6-amazingly-intelligent-animals-that-will-creep-you-out.html
Areck Degeneffe Really we can’t know how animals are
Areck Degeneffe Not being them or being able to communicate
Areck Degeneffe But even if we use them for food, products etc. We still provide them with food shelter etc
Peter Dublin You make a good argument
Peter Dublin and I can imagine that it’s possible
Peter Dublin that every life form is sentient
Peter Dublin but I don’t know if it makes a difference
Peter Dublin to the question of what happens when we die
Peter Dublin If we were just atoms
Areck Degeneffe Well if you think about it biologically, your brain shuts down. If the brain is the source of your conciousness, then that would mean that it does as well right?
Peter Dublin or just animals,
Peter Dublin then we couldn’t make choices
Areck Degeneffe And we would simply return to the state of unconciousness we were in before we were born
Areck Degeneffe How can we be afraid of something we have experienced before?
Areck Degeneffe Have you really ever thought about living for eternity?
Areck Degeneffe Just being alive, forever.
Peter Dublin Yeah
Peter Dublin That’s what people want
Peter Dublin Immortality
Areck Degeneffe That’s what they think they want
Areck Degeneffe But if you ever actually had it
Areck Degeneffe Wouldn’t you become bored?
Peter Dublin if there isn’t a god
Peter Dublin then yes
Peter Dublin but if there is
Areck Degeneffe Then what?
Peter Dublin then he can make all kinds of interesting things for us to do
Peter Dublin anything is possible
Peter Dublin I mean people like being alive
Peter Dublin so they would just keep doing that
Areck Degeneffe You go to heaven and you have infinite orgams forever, you can meet all the people that have ever been, then what
Areck Degeneffe Once you’ve done all that
Areck Degeneffe Maybe create a mini universe yourself
Areck Degeneffe See how that goes
Areck Degeneffe Then what?
Areck Degeneffe Eternity is a mighty long time
Areck Degeneffe Most people don’t realize it, mostly because of eternity itself being unending
Areck Degeneffe And being finite beings
Areck Degeneffe It’s hard for us to comprehend
Areck Degeneffe Like the fourth dimension
Peter Dublin Then what?
Peter Dublin Then I guess we start over from the beginning
Areck Degeneffe Like reincarnation?
Peter Dublin maybe it ends
Peter Dublin I mean maybe the universe itself starts over
Areck Degeneffe Could be
Peter Dublin and then we get to relive it a different way
Peter Dublin but we won’t remember
Peter Dublin who we were
Peter Dublin so it won’t matter
Areck Degeneffe So how many souls do you think there are
Peter Dublin that’s funny
Peter Dublin I’ve never though of that
Areck Degeneffe One per person? Or are some souls re living new lives
Peter Dublin It could be
Areck Degeneffe If all souls go to heaven
Peter Dublin But we can’t know
Peter Dublin Unless we can somehow remember
Peter Dublin our past selves
Areck Degeneffe That means there are as many as there are people, or animals as there have ever been
Areck Degeneffe So heaven would be like
Areck Degeneffe An infinitely crowded bus
Peter Dublin well it has infinite
Peter Dublin space
Peter Dublin so we would all fit
Peter Dublin no matter how many there were
Peter Dublin but it’s not really infinite
Peter Dublin assuming that the human race all die out eventually
Peter Dublin once the sun supernovas
Peter Dublin or the universe collapses
Areck Degeneffe Well we can’t know if we will figure out space travel by them
Areck Degeneffe *then
Peter Dublin then there are a finite number
Areck Degeneffe Or even if we are a diffferent species
Peter Dublin On the other hand
Peter Dublin Maybe the human race does survive
Areck Degeneffe Considering we’ve only been around what, a couple thousand years
Peter Dublin and in 1 million years
Areck Degeneffe As far as humans as we think them today
Areck Degeneffe 1 million years is a long time
Peter Dublin we will have evolved
Peter Dublin into something else
Peter Dublin we will be a different species, some of us
Peter Dublin but others will still be human
Areck Degeneffe Could be
Peter Dublin then that will prove that evolution really happens
Peter Dublin and that humans are not specieal
Areck Degeneffe Why do we need to feel any more special
Peter Dublin and do not have souls
Peter Dublin I guess if we have power, then we think we are the best
Peter Dublin Because it’s human nature
Areck Degeneffe We are a product of millions and millions of years of evolution, before that a product of stars and planets and space
Areck Degeneffe Billions and billions of years in the making
Areck Degeneffe And here you are today
Areck Degeneffe Isn’t that a little special?
Peter Dublin I feel like the beauty of sensation is special
Areck Degeneffe I think that’s more amazing than a god poofing us into existance
Peter Dublin But why do we trust our minds?
Peter Dublin If our admiration of nature
Areck Degeneffe We can’t. That’s why we have science.
Peter Dublin is just evolution talking
Peter Dublin then why do we trust that science is always right?
Areck Degeneffe We don’t trust ourselves, we have thousands of others do it too
Areck Degeneffe And if it continues to be true
Areck Degeneffe Then it is
Areck Degeneffe As long as it can be replicated
Areck Degeneffe Why would people trust a single book written many many years ago
Areck Degeneffe That has been edited by people in power many times
Areck Degeneffe Written by men as well
Peter Dublin Ok I realize that trusting is uncertain
Peter Dublin but I think that you have to trust
Peter Dublin your own perceptions
Peter Dublin as true
Peter Dublin if you trust science
Areck Degeneffe Your perceptions can deceive you, have any mind altering substances, conditions things can become skewed
Areck Degeneffe Optical illusions are your perception getting tricked
Peter Dublin Right
Peter Dublin But who is to say that everyone isn’t already skewed?
Peter Dublin We can’t really know that we aren’t all experiencing the same delusion
Areck Degeneffe Most people believe in various religions
Peter Dublin I’m saying what if when we see something
Peter Dublin or touch something
Peter Dublin What if it isn’t really there?
Peter Dublin What if it’s just a perception
Peter Dublin that we share
Areck Degeneffe We can only draw conclusions from our 5 senses
Areck Degeneffe And even if this is an illusion, we can draw as many conclusions with the senses we have
Areck Degeneffe and learn more about this non reality at least
Areck Degeneffe Which is all we could really do if we were being deceived in such a way isn’t it?
Peter Dublin Well, I think
Peter Dublin that is the same thing
Peter Dublin that we do with religion
Peter Dublin Is that we don’t know
Peter Dublin if it’s real,
Peter Dublin but we go on as if it were real
Areck Degeneffe But the difference is
Peter Dublin to see what is there
Areck Degeneffe They accept it, and don’t try to find out more
Areck Degeneffe So the point is
Areck Degeneffe Always question EVERYTHING
Areck Degeneffe Try to find out as much as you can by yourself
Peter Dublin Good
Peter Dublin Allright I am going to leave now
Peter Dublin But it was a great conversation
Peter Dublin Thanks
Areck Degeneffe No problem
“Give me context or GTFO!”

- Patrick Henry
That’s the thing. There was no context. It just started randomly.
I guess the context was that someone asked for the answers, and intooblivion answered the best he could.
BTW I figured it out, we are because we weren’t and time is because it wasn’t, and according to our universe, what wasn’t must eventually be.
in other words, the world came into existence because two hypothetical nonexistent undefined numbers create a specific number when put into an equation
You’re welcome everybody.
BINGO! I LOVE that answer sersoft. what is inevitable is in fact inevitable.
Ok, going back to Zeitgeist
Actually, I think that this is not quite so true.
The movie Zeitgeist says that Horus is a prototype of various ancient Gods, and Jesus was one of them. However, there seems to be no actual source saying that Horus
- was born from a virgin
- had 12 disciples
- died by crucification or any other kind of death (except by his symbolic death at the end of the day, therefore bringing the night)
There wasn’t even death by crucification in ancient Egypt.
Source: https://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_jcpa5c.htm
I’ve read in another place that the texts asserting the similarities don’t have sources for their claims, and the sources cited actually sometimes contradict the conclusions made.
Also:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misconception#Christianity
Christmas being born in Dec 25th is also not from the canonical gospels nor early Christianity. There is a movie suggesting that the Roman Empire used to steal traditions and celebrations from the territories they conquered. The Christmas date, along with the Easter’s date and many other cultural aspects of Christianity, was therefore inserted by Catholic Church in Christianity after it was widely spread.
Somewhere in Zeitgeist says that Jesus was invented by the Roman Empire to obtain control. That makes no sense to me. Christianity was only adopted in the 4th century by Rome, and then it was used to obtain control.
Anyway, I might pursue the subject a little more, but it looks like Zeitgeist fails.
Guess I should have done a little research. Thanks for that
The stuff about December 25th I knew already though :3
guga: I think the problem here is that you’re trying to apply Horus completely to Jesus and I’m not sure you can do that. The Jesus story seem to have taken bits and pieces from older religions (such as Horus) and tacked on contemporary practices such as crucifixion.
I still fail to believe that someone, as written about in the Bible, like Jesus would not have any contemporary evidence whatsoever. You’ve got some guy gathering followers, healing people, threatening the power structure, calling himself the “King of the Jews”, being sentenced to death, coming back to life, then ascending (physically) to heaven? And there’s NO contemporary evidence of this? C’mon! Not even a passing mention of the guy?
EDIT: I believe that, like the story of Star Wars (a person being tempted into doing evil acts can eventually redeem himself and a battle between good versus evil), it is an allegory/parable of real life. It isn’t, in my opinion, meant to be taken literally. Searching for Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber misses the point and misses the forest for the trees. The Bible is a collection of fictional works akin to the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars…even Half-Life. It’s a great story and has a great message. Turning it into law, however, is completely scary to me; more scary than anything else.
To be honest, in a historical context, one can probably disregard the coming back to life and all that. Other than that I don’t think any Jesus figure in history would have been of any more interest than any other “rebel” in the eyes of history writers or chronicler and whatnot.
That being said, your first point seems to be quite reasonable, and I think it’s quite plausible that the Jesus story, like almost any other religious myth etc. is based on previous cultural elements, at least in the way that it is remembered.
Of course, I’m not a theologist and I’m not very knowledgeable on the subject.
That is exactly it for me. I kinda think that it is possible there was a MAN named Jesus that had some revolutionary ideas, but I don’t believe in the miracles and a lot of the amazing claims that are now tied to the name. I believe it’s like the broken telephone game. There is no contemporary evidence because at the time he was just some guy with a very small following. Not important enough for there to be much written.
As things go on, the story changes, and things get exaggerated. Before you know it a whole church is built on the blurred foundations that are so far from anything or anyone real it’s no longer recognizable.
I think it’s very possible that there was a profit, or visionary named Jesus ( or a man that the character Jesus was based off of ), but I don’t think he was anything special at the time, so little evidence exists. It’s the people and the story that became the big deal over time, because people make legends and myths grow with each retelling. It’s our nature.
Yeah, if he or someone he was based on really did exist, I imagine he was some Gandhi-like figure, albeit on a smaller scale, and since there was no modern media back then, the people that followed him and saw wisdom in his teachings simply passed on the knowledge, which permutated as time passed.
I had this idea of writing a Back to the Future fanfic one time (yes, I came to my senses shortly afterwards) based on Doc Brown’s quip about going back to “DEC 25 0000” to “witness the birth of Christ” where the time circuits malfunctions and sends Marty back to Jesus’ time (ignoring the fact that there isn’t actually a 0CE year) and, due to the spatial problem of time travel, actually ends up in Jesus’ region (don’t ask!).
Anyway, when he gets there, Marty witnesses the real Jesus…some unwashed con artist that uses magic tricks to gain followers and is crucified after he sleeps with Pontius Pilate’s wife. The last words of the fanfic is Marty saying, “This is heavy.”
Marty coming into the time is later written about in Exodus 13:21.
:retard:
haha, I say do it!
Are you encouraging fanfics?
Burb: Don’t tempt me!
Only that one. And only if it’s made by daniel :3
Actually, the movie Zeitgeist tried to apply Horus completely to Jesus. The author was so eager to disprove Jesus’ existence, even as a man, that it ended up stumbling in his own ideas.
I’ve read somewhere a theory about Jesus being a Jew version of Buddha, mixed with various stories of pagan gods and the broken telephone game.
Somewhere else says that Jesus’ story was based on the life of some guy actually living around 100 BC, again mixed with pagan gods and the broken telephone game.
Of course, there is the main idea that Jesus actually lived from ~5 BC to ~30 AD, and his life was, again, distorted.
In my opinion, all of those theories are plausible.
A curious fact about Buddha. He said about miracles: “…I dislike, reject and despise them”. He also said he was only a natural son of his parents, a human being, not a god. Nevertheless, lots of miracles are attributed to him and he is worshiped as a god.
+1
Guga: Then the Zeitgeist movie dropped the ball, too, I’m afraid.
Also, I have written about three pages of the fanfic so far. :retard: Maybe I’ll post it somewhere when I’m done…if I complete it. I’m so ashamed of myself.
