not necessarily in that order
I’m not a fan of capitalism. It sounds great on paper, but in the real world it’s far from great. The problem is, I have absolutely no idea what other system we could use.
wow-ism - everybody is addicted to a mmorpg
I believe we need an economic mixture. A bit of socialism, a bit of capitalism, etc. Private enterprise with government oversight, with public oversight of government. I think it’s the best system we can have, to be honest.
You still have the same problems like those we see in capitalism. For example, large corporations could easily invest millions (or billions for that matter) into marketing programs for certain politicians that most benefit the companies interests. Without the proper attention / funding in the media a politician would never become known to the public. Have you never wondered why so many politicians are rich and have connections to many different industries?
Like I said, government oversight could regulate these kinds of things as well as public oversight of government. Proper oversight, not this namby-pamby stuff we have now.
For example: Get rid of the moneyed interests. One person cannot contribute more than X amount of money to a campaign and only members of that campaign may advertise.
Again, not perfect, but better…
Yes but you are assuming this ‘government’ is perfect and not flawed. That is something rarely found in humans.
Also, the public is given information through the news primarely, most of the news comes from a few primary sources. These things can easily be influenced.
That’s what we have here, and it’s still far from perfect.
You can’t have a perfect system of government, humans aren’t infallible.
So I have seen a few common arguments against Anarchy here.
- “The powerful and aggressive will take take power over the rest of us.”
Is this not exactly what we have now? The difference in an Anarchist society is that you would have the ability to stop those who steal from you and exert force over you. Something you cannot do now.
2.Humans by nature need to be be ruled.
For the majority of human existence we lived without government and did just fine in tribal communities.
- We need the state to protect property, safety etc…
The reality of the state is that they will steal whatever they want from you because they have the police and jails and the military. They will attempt to bribe you to get you to participate and give them moral sanction for their theft by getting you to participate in a system that allows you to “choose” this that and the other. Of course, you can only choose your master, you cannot choose not to be a slave. Which is of course why the whole thing is so patently ridiculous.
They cannot protect you from theft while stealing half of your income, they cannot protect you from violence when they have a legal monopoly on force, and have police that beat citizens.
Nice generalising there.
And excellent rebuttal!
Hey, you made vague points about every capitalist country out there without citing anything, you can’t really criticise me.
EDIT: Wow, that video is retarded. A whole load of nonsense just boiled down to “governments are bad because of police and taxes.”
I made points about the nature of government, which is violence. I was not intending to write a thesis on this message board. Forgive me.
You could perhaps explain how the nature of government is violence maybe. If you can only do that through a thesis, your skill with language is clearly lacking.
EDIT: you could also try doing it without linking to vapid videos other people have made.
Isn’t it obvious? The only way that any government maintains it’s social control is through violence. If you do not pay your taxes men with guns show up to force you to pay, and if you resist they will shoot you. If you attempt to sell a harmless (or even beneficial) illegal product that people wish to purchase, men will show up with guns. Violence is at the center of everything the state does. Anarchism wishes to replace that with non aggression and voluntary relationships.
Edit: Why the attitude? Is it possible for you to have a discussion without sounding like a spoiled child?
That’s such a load of rubbish. If you don’t pay your taxes you have to go to court proceedings, you don’t get shot. And if you do something illegal, you can expect police to come along: that’s called the law.
Look at times when the influence of state has been removed and you invariably get riots where violence is inflicted on innocent people, not just representatives of the state.
EDIT: Also, how do you propose to run any kind of infrastructure in an anarchist state?
Not sure how I’m being a spoiled child, care to explain?
