Ask an "Amurican"

That’s what the cops are for… as well as parents actually being parents and teaching their kids that killing is bad.

You raise a good point, many Americans do like their guns. But to clear up any confusion, just as many Americans (or close to just as many) don’t like guns. My mom hates guns and thinks they should be illegal, at least for the average citizen. In my experience, 90% of Americans don’t own guns, although this is obviously a skewed statistic, gun ownership is much more prevalent in other parts of the country.

Isn’t that a bit difficult in a country where the military industrial complex is so dominant? A country which was founded on the corpses of exterminated Indian peoples? A country that has a history of successful warlike endeavours?

I imagine it must at least be a little more difficult to teach than over here in Germany, where the trauma of the second world war is carried on from generation to generation.

I think it’s more ironic than difficult :retard:

I think it’s more irifficult.

A country that claimed it’s borders by war? That doesn’t sound at all like European history. When i was in school we learned about black history, the mistreatment of Africans, Indians, Japanese and Germans from the inception of our country to modern times. every country has their skeletons, and we accept them just as any other country does. we are not ignorant about our past, we just fail to see what is currently happening.

I had family fight on both sides of WWII, the Germans probably ended up suffering the most by becomes the next guilt ridden nation for the next 100 years. The fact that Germans pay for like 20% of Israels military says it all. As both a German and American, i feel much sadness regarding this issue.

My dad has a beautiful collection of guns. That picture isnt too far off. He loves shooting them and polishing and all that. It is like his second set of tools. He has his tool box, and his gun collection.

Boys and their toys.

(salivating)

The irony of a German saying this is hilarious. Seriously, a country exterminating a group of people, expanding its borders with war and series of warlike endeavours (at least ours suceed)? I can’t imagine any country like that.
Mockery aside, the fact that someone did something wrong 100 years ago hardly means that suddenly you are a violent person who likes killing people. I have yet to meet one person who does not understand the value of a human life because we have a supposedly “violent” history as a country. The premise is ridiculous, especially given other, more recent violent countries (I’m at it again).

Oh you.

World War Two and America is always a sensitive subject, some say America would have had no chance against the Germans alone, others say the Soviets did all the work and so on. Most people don’t even know the difference between Nazi warcriminals and the regular armed forces of Germany '45 (Wehrmacht).

I don’t know whether to thank the Americans or not, people in my country say they hate Nazi’s yet our country had the highest percentage in volunteers for the SS. The Soviets fought most of Germany’s armed forces including elite forces such as SS panzerdivisions - although the Germans had much higher succes in local battles, overall the Soviets were just too overwhelming (endless hordes of infantry and armour) during the late war after the Blitzkrieg doctrine had failed on the extremely huge fields of Russia.

I can’t judge a person on his beliefs 70 years ago, especially at a time when the economy was crippled all around the world (that’s how all the extreme political parties got their power in the first place).
The world today isn’t great, but I doubt it would be any better if the war had different outcomes.

Sorry for the late off-topic reply…

A lot of the shit happening today can be connected to WW2.

That war truly did change the world we live in. And if it didn’t happen, NYC would still have 2 more towers.

Not necessarily. You can’t pretend to know what effect past events (or lack thereof) have had on the world today.

insert some linking here, but cba to write it all down, so I can pop to the point where it starts getting relevant – Why does the Al-Qaeda have power? Because the US gave power and support to the Taliban. Why did they give them power? Because they fought the Soviets. Why was the US happy to have someone fight the Soviets? Because of the Cold War. Why did the Cold War start? Because the US and USSR acted like babies post WW2.

And so on.

I don’t think you get the point of my post.

Even if certain past events (even bad ones) did not take place… it’s possible that, as a direct result, other events could have taken their place and made the world much the same anyways. On the other hand, those events could also make the world a much better, or even possibly a far worse one than what we know today.

Well yes, that could indeed be the case. But I wasn’t trying to point out that if WW2 didn’t happen, nothing bad would have happened. I was merely pointing out that a lot of the shit we have to endure with these days, is a result of WW2.

Of course there’s still the possibility that the Cold War still happened even if WW2 didn’t happen, and that version of the Cold War could’ve been far more disastrous as well, we’ll never know. What we do know, however, is what is now and how it connects with history as we know it.

I found a handy list of why most foreign countries seem to hate America.

Anyone care to comment?

Nagasaki and Hiroshima were necessary sacrifices of lives in order to save the literally millions who would have dies had we attempted a land invasion. Its just kind of annoying when people say that that was inhumane.
In general we did a whole lot in WWII, which is saying a lot as, unlike europe, we were fighting a power equal to Germany on our own while helping with Germany.
But all this should be irrelevant as that happened 70 years ago, although it somehow got brought up.

Well…

Does not compute. Rich people in America are also fat.

Saving a million lives is inhumane? That includes the tens of thousands of civilians who would die in the attack, many of them forced to fight, many willingly, in defense of their homeland. The result would be far bloodier than even 10 nukes.

Not so much.
