Catholics have the doctrine of transubstantiation - which is what Wark’s comment was referencing. So for them, they ARE drinking blood and eating flesh.
Christianity is a religion based on human sacrifice - the very idea is one of a completely different age.
Also - transubstantiation means that the sacrament isn’t just representational or symbolic of The Blood of Christ and The Body of Christ, it IS the REAL blood and body of Christ. God makes it real and actual supernaturally. That’s transubstantiation. They’re drinking REAL blood and eating REAL flesh. Or at least that’s their belief.
Again, I know that is their belief, but I know that it’s a bottle of wine from the Co-Op down the road, or at least that’s what my local church does.
Anyhoo, the cults part wasn’t an entirely serious accusation, more a conversational jibe at Assassin as in all fairness, his one-sided tirade of “My opinion is right, you’re wrong” does make the words ‘Religious Cult’ come to mind.
Anyway, now that I’ve explained that, I’ll leave the serious thread as serious…
Right, it’'s wine and bread. And it’s wine and bread for them too - until they receive it, and God transforms it into blood and flesh.
You must be Protestant. Protestants don’t hold the that doctrine. This is one of the differences between the two.
Anyway, my reply to the ‘cult’ comment basically meant - “Does it matter who’s blood it is? Drinking blood is drinking blood.”
And it DOES sound bizarre and cultish. Drinking the blood and eating the flesh of a human sacrifice in a religious ceremony is a really weird and crazy thing - whether it’s actual or symbolic.
Human Sacrifice, cannibalism, - People that grow up in church just accept this as perfectly normal. Because it’s always been a normal part of their lives and they think of their family and all the people they know from church and they’re nice, normal people. Everything’s perfectly normal - and everyone dresses nicely and the ladies smell lovely, and then you go to brunch.
But when you think about what the religion IS - it’s weird and alien - something from a completely different time and culture.
The thing about “transubstantiation” is that it remains bread and wine even if they call it blood and body.
Blood is compromised primarily of white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Wine doesn’t suddenly transform into these simply because someone believes it does.
I just want to say here that you guys have been great these past few weeks. Thanks everyone for a comparatively civil discussion. Here are some points I want to address.
Exactly. My statement that information only comes from intelligent sources is evidence for an intelligent creator does not in any way point to a God of the Bible, but just some kind of intelligent force.
Ill answer your first question if you scroll down a bit.
Yeah, Assassin, be a little more courteous and try to formulate arguments a bit clearer. Your tone is that Im right and everyone else is wrong, and thats just not fair at all.
Another fantastic point. How can I prove that information comes only from intelligent sources? Have I studied the source of all information? Can I show that all information has come from intellegence? Can I prove my statement? Absolutely not. No way. And there exists nothing to disprove it. But that by itself would be a terrible unreasonable argument. The reason my statement is valid is that all information we have encountered has come form an intelligent source. The rosetta stone. Computers or books. Green light means go. The information all around us has an intelligent source, always. Ill explain this more in the next post.
Who decides which combinations are valid? What decides the combinations of letters that convey information? Some information is meaningless. the letters h c r i a contain information, but useless information. Rearrange them to spell c h a i r. Same letters, but now something beyond letters is conveyed, now there is a concept of something on which to sit.
Haha, made me laugh. First recall that God was the one behind the guy losing his legs. That was God’s idea, and Gods plan.
Oh and believe me God answered those millions of people’s prayers. He answered, ‘No’. God isnt a magic trick where if you want something hard enough he gives it to you. Remember who is in charge here. God, not the person.
I’ll address this point because it is key to understanding evolution and, actually, even the origin of life:
The reason that “c-h-a-i-r” conveys information and “h-c-r-i-a” doesn’t, even though both have the same letters, is via the fact of natural selection. The letters “CH” bind together more easily in that order than they do in the “HC” order. It’s more likely that the letters C and H will form “CH” than they would “HC”.
A word also is more apt to survive in the wild if it has at least one vowel (A, E, I, O, U and possibly Y and rarely W) versus not having a vowel. The word “CHAIR” also survives better in the wild than “HCRIA”. Eventually, after hundreds of thousands of generations, it is rare to see a misspelled word.
Again, this is an analogy. Words themselves aren’t alive but creatures are; they can adapt and survive, their mutations either being beneficial or neutral (in which case, they’re passed on) or deleterious (in which case, they’re removed from the equation). HCRIA would be a deleterious mutation and removed. CHAIR would be a beneficial or neutral mutation and therefore passed on to future generations.
Eventually, a mutation might happen where more letters are placed onto the word and you would have something like “HIGHCHAIR” or “CHAIRMAN”. Both of these words have the common ancestor of “CHAIR” but they explain different things (one is a raised seat for babies for feeding and the other is a person at the head of a group that makes decisions or acts as a spokesperson). This is known as speciation.
Again, this is an analogy, but hopefully you get my point.
LOL. that was just a joke, and I hoped that you will understand it since christianity forbids drinking blood.
I think that every man should think so. I talk about what i know what i don’t know I don’t talk so about everything I talk I have an information. am I wrong about something? show me evidence.
@Max and Daniel: I admit that there’s no way I can determine if all information comes form an intelligent source. But thats what you turn to. When you see Mount Rushmore, you dont think of time and chance acting on matter with the help of natural laws, you think of some intelligent force because it is not only ununsual but conveys information.
“You can’t base an argument on a false assumption”
Oh, my bad. But really, I know I cant prove this, but I havent seen otherwise yet.
And one more thing to Daniel, look at this picture. I just searched DNA backbone and found it.
Notice how there are bonds between the base pairs like As and Ts, and each base is connected to the phosphate backbone. But, very importantly, there are not bonds between rows. Nothing about the adenine in the top right told the cytosine below it attach next. So the bases dont line up because they are attracted to each other in any way.
To use our letter ananlogy even more, think of putting magnetic letters on a fridge. There is a force causing them to adhere to the fridge yes, but nothing about the letters affects which order they are placed in on the fridge… thats my job.
There is a problem here. You are assuming that information comes from intelligent source, but you said nothing about intelligence. You would have to say that intelligence comes from information. That is true for humans, our intelligence comes from the information stored in DNA.
DNA, however, is information which has not been proven to have come from an intelligent source. At least, that is not what has been happening for billions of years, or, even if you don’t buy the idea of evolution, that is what has been happening at least for thousands of years. It wasn’t Adam and Eve who created the 7 billion people that are alive today, it was procreation, which is ruled by Physics, a.k.a. nature. The amount of intelligence in 7 billion people is far superior than the intelligence of just two people and the amount of information Science has discovered would not have been discovered by 2 people in the same amount of time and perhaps not even in an indefinite time.
There is another crucial problem of assuming the premise that all intelligent sources must have been created from information provided by another intelligent source. God is, by definition, an intelligent source, which, by the premise above, must have been created. That contradicts the idea of a non-created God. Using this premise, what we conclude is that some intelligent source S1 created the universe, and S1 was created by another intelligent source S2, which was created by S3 and so on. Like the integral numbers: every integer has a predecessor.
By the way, there is no absurdity with the idea that all creators were created. It is counter-intuitive, but not absurd in any way.
You ignored something here. The letters THEMSELVES have affinities to each other…and some letter combinations have a better chance at surviving than others so these letter combinations propagate through the future generations. The “information” comes from this “better chance at surviving” (aka “Natural Selection”) and these natural affinities being propagated through the surviving generations.
Again, “CH” has a better chance at surviving than “HC”. So, “HCIAR” will not survive but “CHAIR” will. Eventually, it’ll be rare that you’ll have misspelled words.
Think of it this way assassin47. Look at the computer you have in front of you. It’s probably running windows 7, the latest OS by microsoft. Computers didn’t simply arrive at their current state. You may look at it now and think “Without the OS, the computer wouldn’t boot. Without the monitor, you can’t see what you’re calculating, and you couldn’t even input anything without a keyboard!”
But, all of these things had predecessors. Way back, we had punch cards for input and output, not needing a monitor or other input devices or an operating system. Through a huge system of small updates is how computers are the way they are today.
With evolution, mutations are small updates to the species, and if the update successfully downloads with the other animals, the update lives on. Everything had a predecessor, with parts with a similar function or even with unnecessary parts while it was on the way to the newest version.
This is why we don’t see any punch card inputs in our dna strands today, we didn’t need them anymore so we got rid of them.
