Any news?

Been absent since my first playthrough on release day. Decided to give the mod a second shot and I’m still amazed by the quality of the game. I have no clue what’s going on in development these days. Do this project have anything to do with the Steam release? Are there any news about it?

  1. Yes. This blog is for showcasing the newer textures that will be included with the Steam release (specifically, the Retail version; the one you spend money on).

  2. They’re moving to the 2013 engine & Source 2 (With Source 2 being retail). Since you came out of the wood work and likely haven’t read the rules, I’ll let you know now: Questions like that don’t have a place to be asked on this blog. Not all the devs are networked with each other constantly. That being said, questions like that would be better suited for here. The same general rule of thumb applies there as well; don’t expect an answer to your question.

This sub-forum seemed to be the most active and best chance for me to get a quick answer to my question, which I got. Thanks for the reply, looking forward to the retail version!

Moved posts to a new thread in a different section.

Source 2? I don’t think that was stated here on the forums.

We are not moving to Source 2. That was a completely unsubstantiated rumour which got very out of hand.

When you aren’t specific about something you don’t need to be vague about in a place where it’s shown time and time again that even specific answers get misconstrued, you’re gonna have some misunderstandings.

Why do you assume we didn’t need to be vague about it? We have a very good reason for not being specific, but we wanted the community to know why so much work has been involved. That’s totally fair. We also immediately clarified that it was not Source 2 - but that rumour still gets spread around. No harm, no foul, it’s just a little silly. Good ol’ internet.

Regardless, it is not Source 2. It’s kind of an illogical conclusion to jump to, as well, really.

I think I said that with more conviction than I intended, but what I was getting at was yeah, it’s definitely an illogical conclusion, though “a new engine” is pretty open-ended considering how easily some in this community have been known to make mountains out of mole hills. This place has a history of that.

Oh, and I didn’t mean to imply the team needed to be specific. I should probably just stop talking about this stuff, I always seem to come off the wrong way.

No worries. As I said, no harm, no foul!

Ohh. My apologies. I remember seeing one of the lead devs talk about it, so I thought it was. Enh, my bad.

The most logical conclusion is that they use the same engine every other licensee uses (Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable, Insurgency, Titanfall): Portal 2’s 2011 branch.

If it was just the same engine as all those other games, why would they need to keep it vague rather than just saying so? I’m not super well-informed about all of this, so don’t think much of this if you think the answer is obvious.

When there’s news, you will know about it. It will not be kept a secret.

Yeah. Something as big as Black Mesa is going to attract A LOT of attention from Half-Life fans, so you can expect it to spread across the internet like wildfire when something major happens.

You can always look them up on social media E.G. Facebook. You’d be able to see what goes on that way.

I thought Black Mesa moving to source 2 wasn’t true I mean Valve would release at least one of their own games for the new engine before letting a third party developer release their game on it.

If Valve were to do a scheme similar to what they did with HL2, they may release an upgraded version of HL1 (Black Mesa) along side upgraded version of HL2, all with the release of HL3, and all on Source2.
This is what immediately sprung to my highly optimistic mind when they were first talking about a “new” engine.
But alas it wasn’t to be and HL3 is still in the wind.

Much like Black Mesa in 2010, Valve had a totally complete Half Life three game some time ago but decided it did not meet the standards of their vision so whole parts had to be redone. That is why HL3 is taking longer than HL2 to finish

But we know they won’t. The first game on Source 2 was the Left 4 Dead 2 port (confirmed on linkedin long time ago) and the first public Source 2 thing is a Dota 2 Workshop Tool. There are also many rumours and leaks about Left 4 Dead 3.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
