AMD 6850 and 6870 released today.

If anybody is thinking of replacing their GPU or building new completely this new offering from AMD is worth noting.

Early benchmarks show the 6870 performing in between the 5850 and 5870 (slightly better than the GTX 460 1gb too) at around $250/£200 which is pretty good value imo.

Not worth the upgrade if you already have a mid to high range 5 series or a GTX4 series but then we knew that would be the case anyway.

The 69xx cards are due late next month.

I think its kind of lame how they renamed the mid ranged cards and released them first, some people might get confused and thing they’re buying something else :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems like Amd sent out the 6850 with the wrong Bios to get higher results than the gtx460.

What do you base that off of?

Why is it so impossible for the 6850 to actually just be better than the 460? the GTX 4XX’s are targeting the HD 5XXX’s not the HD 6XXX’s so its not exactly a big deal, just wait for the GTX 5XXs

ordered a 6870 earlier today. replacing my 4870. expecting sexy times on crysis

Well it IS better, but it’s not enough to upgrade over.

And you’re an idiot if you buy one and have a GTX 4XX or 5XXX. UK_SNIPER.

EDIT: You had a 4XXX, but even then, just go for a 5XXX and save yourself the cash ffs…

Several tests show it. I have read 3 german articles about the new cards and all are the same.

I almost jacked an HD 5750 yesterday, but I knew the 6 series was just around the corner so I’ll wait until they’re on display. :evil face:

hardware piracy FTW!

I’ve read a few reviews, and I’ve seen nothing about that.

This is not an upgrade to the 5xxx series, these are mid range cards. Replacing a 5xxx to a 6xxx is a downgrade.

At the moment (here in the UK anyway) the 5 series are still going for the same price even though the 68xx cards are better bang for buck.

For example a 5850 cost £200 and and 6870 costs £175 at ebuyer.com, the 6870 being a good percentage better.

Don’t forget also that the 6xxx series is going to be better at dealing with tesselation etc from dx11. Whether that side of things will compete with the Nvidia dx11 cards is another question.

well a 5 series is around 100£ a 6 series is 130£.

its part of a larger pc upgrade and since this is a lot cheaper than what i was expecting, i’ve ordered it.

kev

Oh and Nvidia doesn’t?

Maybe you should check your facts.

£.

Eww.

That is odd.
